Bob M. Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Seem to remember some discussion a few weeks back concerning wood/leather etc. tsubas , but I cannot find the topic . Hope this is of some interest. Bob M Quote
Curran Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 Nice tsuba. I cannot see the signature clearly, but it lookes to be a commissioned piece. Have you the translation, or the name of the maker? Quote
Bob M. Posted May 13, 2007 Author Report Posted May 13, 2007 Understand the tsuba to be by Momoe at age 63 in autumn 1860 (Manen 1) - any other info. would be very useful . I have attached a closer (clearer ? ) image. Thanks for the interest. Bob Quote
Curran Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Dear Bob, I do not think I can add anything to what you already know about this tsuba. While I can read an acceptable bit of the writing, I cannot recognize the signature yet. I tried looking up Momoe in Haynes and found no match. Could it be a retirement name (taken at the age of 63)? Nice little challenge! I sold the majority of my tsubas to pay for another purchase. ~I let a few go that I wish I had been able to keep. Anyhow, one of the few I decided to keep was this one . A listmember helped translate it as "Late winter in 1856. Responding to Mr. Tamiya Norimochi’s order" with the tsuba smith's signature on the back of the tsuba. I've seen a spat of these tsuba signed and dated as commissioned pieces. Nearly all that I have seen do seem to be from 1850<->1865. Yours is the first I've seen done by makie, and the first on which the smith has given his age. If I can figure anything out, I'll post or email it to you. Thanks for posting the tsuba you have so far. I look forward to whatever more you choose to share with the list. CCC ___________________ Ps. Have any Hazama or Kunitomo tsuba? I do not own any, but that seems to be my current corner of study. Quote
Bob M. Posted May 14, 2007 Author Report Posted May 14, 2007 Hi Curran, Thanks for your interest/help - much appreciated. I like your posted tsuba very much .The quality of work is really good and that is one of the things that I look for initially in the swords and tsubas that I collect. My taste is rather eclectic and so I go for anything that I like without regard to age or particular field . Having said that , the 'unusual' is (as you can probably see from the posted tsubas ) always an attraction. Will try to post a few more items over the coming weeks..... Bob Quote
Nobody Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 I tried looking up Momoe in Haynes and found no match. Could it be a retirement name (taken at the age of 63)? Nice little challenge! The name could be pronounced as "Toko (桃江) or Toukou". Quote
Bob M. Posted August 22, 2013 Author Report Posted August 22, 2013 Hi Everybody , I was looking at this piece again the other day , and recalled this thread . Can't believe it's been over six years !! Just wondered if any of the newer members of the board would have any ideas / input regarding if the tsuba was a commission and if the artist Momoe is recorded . Thanks ! Quote
