gankaku Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Hi! In my previous post I showed a tanto I was unsure whether to buy or not. I'm curious to know what you think of another one that I had been proposed. It is a tanto koto. In my opinion it has a hada very nice but the blade looks tired. I do not know if the koshirae is part of the same period. The price was 650 euro These is the photos. Quote
Jean Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Andrea, Please, sign all your posts with your first name as per Board rules. You can equally forget this one as there is a big ware (flaw) in the hamon (tempered edge) Koshirae (scabbard/fitiings) is Ok for the price, the hada is tired. You must be aware that when you buy a blade with mounting, the price includes both the blade and the fittings, here for example, if you had the koshirae to be made, handle+scabbard+lacquer will cost you at least 500€. Remains 150€ for the blade ... You will have to chose for your budget either a blade in shirasaya or mountings, both are impossible Quote
gankaku Posted November 22, 2012 Author Report Posted November 22, 2012 I apologize for not signing, I forgot. Is true, it is'nt possible to have both a good blade and a nice koshirae at that price. Thanks for your answer! Andrea Quote
Jorgensen Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Its great you are asking here before buying anything. It will save you some money and also get you a blade, that you probably are able to sell again without loss, when that time comes. I fully agree with Jean, this one is not worth spending your money on, even that it might looks attractive at first glance. Maybe it is, with guidance from the members here, possible to find a descent tanto at this price range on ebay. Thumbs up for you Quote
gankaku Posted November 22, 2012 Author Report Posted November 22, 2012 Many thanks Jorgensen ! And thanks to all of you for the advice! Unfortunately, the desire to own a Nihonto can lead to make mistakes .. Andrea Quote
sanjuro Posted November 22, 2012 Report Posted November 22, 2012 Firstly let me say well done for seeking advice prior to buying. You are at least aware that sometimes wanting to own a nihonto can lead you to making a precipitous purchase. Let this one go. It is no better than the first for different reasons and you can do better. If it is the blade that interests you then consider buying one in shirasaya. One is then not distracted by the koshirae. seek further afield for reputable dealers. The net has many and there are some that are members here. The commercial section of links at the top of this page has ones that we know are decent and know their products. Please stay away from ebay! read all you can get your hands on about nihonto, you will not regret it. Lastly, be patient. The blade will find you. In the meantime, the board is here to help and guide. Generally speaking, there is more knowledge on this board than in any other single place. You are already using it. May your sword find you soon. :D Quote
gankaku Posted November 22, 2012 Author Report Posted November 22, 2012 "The blade will find you" Yeah, I like it!!! :D Andrea Quote
