Hi,

First,I cannot specify, who is the smith.

Because the mei different from Hiraga Morikuni,or possibly another good skillful unknown smith.

Maybe good Tachi sword!

The mei says "Oite Omiya Hachiman-Gu atari,Unryushi Minamoto Morikuni saku".

(Made by Unryushi Minamoto Morikuni, at around Omiya Hachiman shrine.)

於大宮八幡宮辺,雲龍子源護國作

Ura mei:

"Made in a day in February 1945 at shrine,as a shadow sword".

於神前,影打,昭和二十年二月日

When a special commission was received, smiths typically made 3 or so swords, with the one turning out the best used to fill the order. The remaining two or so are known as kageuchi, "shadow swords"...this sword is one of those.

影打 Kageuchi. That is a very interesting addition. In Markus Sesko's book, 'Legends and Stories Around the Japanese Sword', a kageuchi is a second sword made by a smith when given an order to make a sword for a customer. Two swords are forged and polished with the best of the two given to the customer and the kageuchi kept and left unsigned. I guess in this case signed though. John

I see the same info posted by Chris.

Very interesting.

But what does indicate that this blade is one of the "shadow swords" - the non typically mei from this sword smith?!

I heard that sometimes when sowrd are made as offerings for shrines, two swords are made. The better one is then given as the offering (shinuchi) and the other is kept by the smith (kageuchi). But I don't know how accurate that is.
