stevieb1 Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Hi All I have recently posted a request for more information on a sword I have signed Geishu Noju Fujiwara Fuyuhiro and one of the replies I received stated there was a possibility of it being gimei, this has got me thinking as to reasons why someone would attach a signature of a lets say only reasonable quality smith, whats the point? If we look at this in relation to say cars to me its rather like putting a Mercedes badge on a Ford, why not go for Maserati,Bentley or the like. If it is gimei my Geishu Noju Fujiwara Fuyuhiro is possibly pretending to be (misguidedly) the Fuyuhiro of Wakasa who himself was hardly in the realms of Masamune or Juyo Token rated blades in any case. I would really like to have your thoughts on this. Many thanks Stevieb1 Quote
Jean Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Stevie, You have given the solution All famous smiths'mei are by now well documented. No chance (except for greenhorns still believing in Santie) to have gimei accepted on such names. Now, chu saku smiths are numerous. Ubu mumei blades are less valuable than signed ones. So why not put a mei of non well documented sword smiths on these mumei blades, almost bullet proof and worth the chiselled strokes. People won't think that a chu saku smith can be "gimeied" (neologism), but they are ... Quote
IanB Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Jean, Are you implying that Santie doesn't exist? :? :? If so, who puts the sweeties in my stocking at Christmas? Ian Bottomley Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Various reasons, contemporary as well as modern. 1. add value to a mediocre or even fine blade. 2. out of respect for a famous smith. 3. fraudulent reasons (see 1.) KM Quote
Jean Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Ian, There is a basic mistake in the interpretation of my post. Santa Claus doest exist but is often mistaken for his avatar Santie who is a very well known identity usurpator, a scoundrel, a raskal, a crook who at Christmas time puts gimei swords and cast tsubas in poor little Nihontophiles'shoes Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 .....Santa Claus doest exist but is often mistaken for his avatar Santie who is a very well known identity usurpator, a scoundrel, a raskal, a crook who at Christmas time puts gimei swords and cast tsuba in poor little Nihontophiles' shoes........ This is the first good explanation of the situation I heard for a while! Thanks a lot, my children will accept that! Quote
