kunitaro Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 櫃(Hitsu) Muromachi Period (box with top cover) or 長持(Nagamochi) Edo priod (bigger version) Quote
Hinawaju Posted November 3, 2012 Author Report Posted November 3, 2012 Thank you Kunitaro san. Nagamochi seems to be the correct name. Maybe I should have mentioned that it is 70 cm wide. It also have a laqured leather cover. Any idea of its age? regards, Guy R. Quote
Eric H Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 I don‘t know if your chest falls in the same category. Pictured is a HASAMIBAKO - 62cm x 41cm x 41cm - all sides including the top decorated with Aoi-Mon on the nashiji ground, that was used holding clothes while travelling. Eric Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 A Hitsu, (remember Yoroi-bitsu) or Nagamochi carried to Edo on the Sankin-Kotai would with those copper, brass or iron handles become a Hasami-bako. I have some of those and love them. (Having a weakness for boxes!) I also have two Tebako from the Momoyama period, which John mentions above. They were smaller, and perhaps could be conceived of as ladies' vanity cases. Quote
