steve0 Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Hi Guys Wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of material online that explains the usage of this type of mark on blades made in the last few hundred years? All advice and hints welcome but specifically looking for information on what smiths were authorized to mark their work with it from the last few hundred years. thanks Quote
Geraint Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Hi Steve, Do you mean a stamp? I have never come across that but of course several Shinto smiths cut the symbol in the same way as they cut the mei? Quote
bmoore1322 Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Is this what you are meaning ? Brian Quote

Brian thats what it would have looked like but perhaps a stamp was not the right way to describe it, i should have used the word symbol... this is what i mean http://www.nihonto.com/abtartshinkai.html Quote
george trotter Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 The kikumon was used by many many smiths 1600-1868. Almost too many to list. Many of us here have owned such swords...I had a nice Ishido Mitsuhira myself. There are Tamba no kami Yoshimichis etc etc...It is probably best if you trawl through Hawley 1981 as he lists all those who used it...you only have to glance at each page...they jump out at you. I suspect there are also some who he did not list as well. Maybe a google search....unless someone knows of a single source for this info. Otherwise it is just a matter of flipping through sources.
