Civilis Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Hi Guys, After lurking around here for quite some while, I recently decided to register. Compared to most around here I still have lots to learn, but I've come to the right place I think. A few weeks ago I started a conversation with someone that had inhereted a gendaito from his grandfather. After I asked him to remove the tsuka, it appeared to be an antique nihonto in some nice gendaito fittings. I've already spended some time trying to figure out what the Kin mei means, but am unable to do so. Some parts of the characters are missing as can be seen in the picture. Maybe any of you guys can help me? The blade has been shortened, has three holes in the nakago and has some serious rust damage near the kissaski. Quote
Thekirsh Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Hi ???? Civillis?, I think a few strokes that have fallen off but at a guess i would say the mei once read "Norinaga" Simon K Quote
KORSH Posted October 13, 2012 Report Posted October 13, 2012 The first scan is Norimune, the second Norinaga. Norinaga Mei is different. Norimune is similar but not matching. Maybe Gimei of Norimune, but without photos of the blade I really can´t say much. Norinaga1a.pdf Norimune1a.pdf Quote
kunitaro Posted October 13, 2012 Report Posted October 13, 2012 This is "Norinaga" It is called "Kinpun-mei (gold lacquered)" Honnami-family did "Shumei (red lacquer)" for Ubu-mumei sword. and "Kin-zogan (Gold inlay)" for o-suriage sword. Quote
Civilis Posted October 13, 2012 Author Report Posted October 13, 2012 Thank you all very much for all the info. Here's a (not so good) picture of the blade. The damage is a little bit visable and it is supposed to be severe, but I haven't seen it in real life. And ???Civilis??, maybe this link explains a little: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaius_Julius_Civilis Sorry but the signature wasn't visible in my earlier post, did add it though before I posted.... Civilis Posted October 15, 2012 Author Report Posted October 15, 2012 Another foto of the nice silver kamon. I know it is hard to tell from the pictures I posted, but does anyone have an idea of what would be a nice price to acquire this piece? Quote
