Hi All,

I used to have a website that listed 50 styles of Tsukamaki. My provider wasn't kind and the website disappeared about two years ago.

Now I finally got around to getting my hands on the originals again (as they were in storage). This booklet came out of the JSSUS library and I

was given permission to reproduce them.

So, I've scanned them all again, and now have created a PDF file from it. (in two parts, as the file was bigger than the limit of 2Mb)

Again, my apologies for some of the darker images. They are just as the scanner reproduced them, which is very close to what the originals

look like anyway. So here and there there is some loss of detail.

Nevertheless, I hope it might be useful to some people.

Stefan san,

Thank you very much for these files...I have downloaded them to my Nihonto file. Very valuable information...I now regret that I didn't buy a wakizashi last year because I thought the fittings were just "too un-Japanese" and lo and behold they are the "male fittings" of Ise Shrine.

I wonder that there is no pic of Gangimaki leather wrap of Sengoku Jidai (unless I missed it)...but not a problem...I'll just add this pic to my file too!

Thanks again Stefan,

Regards,

Thank you very much for this Stefan! :thanks: I remember your website, and looking for it recently and being disappointed that I couldnt find it. I think this should be a sticky or go in the articles section, excellent resource.

Stefan,

A big thank you from me too. I remember the site, and had been looking for it.

With your permission, I would like to combine them and add them to the articles section with acknowledgement?

Brian,

Sure, I think that is a good idea. Just give the credit to the JSSUS library. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the man in the photo, who was the one that created the

fifty mock tsuka. Maybe someone out there in Nihonto world does???

Can you recreate the PDF into one easily? If not, let me know and I'll send you the big file.

So, maybe now we should get some statistics on the quantity of different tsuka out there. From my experience about 80% are in the two most common styles.

Cheers,

Morning all,

One for George here, ref: PDF 1, are "Kodai zuka kawatachi maki" & PDF 2 "Kawakasane katate maki" variants of Gangi maki?

And thank you Stefan for posting this valuable resource.

Erazer san,

Yes I saw these, but as they both have the diamonds they are different from the "true"? gangimaki I posted.

Whether they are variants of it I don't know...certainly the raised ridge wrap on pdf2 Kawakasane is the same...this effect is achieved (I believe), by the use of string under the leather wrapping.

Maybe a tsukamakishi can advise/comment?

Hi,

first of all: Thank you very much.

BUT: When I try to open the first file, I always get an error message - "file damaged" or something like that. Could someone please check?

Nothing wrong with the files, I have just downloaded them and opened them. Possibly some problems with your Internet connection and a partial download?

All,

I have uploaded the single file to the articles section in the Izakaya members-only section. About 5.5 Megs big. Thanks Stefan.

Regards,

Brian
