DaveT Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 I drew this over the weekend from a photo I took at the Watanabe Collection in Tottori. The helmet seemed to have been hammered from a single sheet of iron. It was very thin towards the top. Anyone know the name for such a helmet? Baigyo no hachi (Shell Shape) or Dog turd. Quote
DaveT Posted October 1, 2012 Author Report Posted October 1, 2012 No tsunomoto either, so Mr Whippy couldn't even be hidden with a large maedate. Quote
estcrh Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 Dave, I believe it would be an "awabi kabuto" (helmet in the shape of a sea shell), unless it was hammered (embossed) out of metal which would make it an "awabi uchidashi kabuto" (helmet embossed in the shape of a sea shell), if it was hammered out of a single sheet of metal it would be an "awabi ichimai uchidashi kabuto". Nice work! http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Categ ... shi_kabuto Quote
DaveT Posted October 2, 2012 Author Report Posted October 2, 2012 thanks Eric for the help, from what I can recall it was one piece. Quote
IanB Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 Dave, A type of seashell is most likely although they usually have bumps on the whorls. I once came across a helmet 'in the shape of a hurricane' which I never really understood, but the idea was a swirling shape. I wonder if this might be along these lines. Ian B. Quote
Justin Grant Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 I vote for ice cream! By the way, if that is a drawing above, that is one heck of a job! Looks real. Quote
Jean Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 Congrats Justin, this was also my opinion (Italian Icecream) Quote
DaveT Posted October 2, 2012 Author Report Posted October 2, 2012 Thanks Ian. The top does look a bit odd. An ugly item. As to the drawing, yes it's a drawing. I use photographs as reference, so it's in no way art, dynamic realism? Copying? I drew a bunch of these for the Watanabe Book, but when Trevor Absolon took over the entire project he decided to use the talented illustrator Brian Snoddy, and booted my work. I'm using the images to populate my own website nihon-no-katchu.com. Drawing is a great way to understand armour, and escape the family for a few hours. I'm planning to do a study of the Date and sendai armours for 2013 and post it as a PDF/IPad download. Here are some others: Quote
