Once again you all miss the intent since you are so rapped up in your superiority of knowledge and have to hide behind a locked thread.I have studied just about everthing related to nihonto and not completely without mentors, including many forums related to the subject. As well I forge tanto in the traditional manner and strive to perfection in this art.

Ebay does not enter the picture for me ,I would not buy Nihonto from that venue. I have in the past purchased one nihonto wak from a reliable source ,Nothing notable but a real koto blade.

I never said that tanto was a great blade or valuable, but still to be venerated as something quite old and vauable in itself.

I guess on some level I get your point as many objects of age should be venerated or appreciated - well at least recognized for still being here instead of gone.

That said when it comes to any type of art objects age in and of itself doesn't equal anything other than it is old - could be like me - old and not particularly good looking. Rocks are REALLY old.

As far as this forum goes all you have to do when reading your library of books on Nihonto check the authors against NMB contributors and there is an amazing overlap.

You would have to pay a lot of money to get the information and opinions offered here freely  I guess at some point in time many of the older members gets tired of answering the same questions and recommending the same learning process for newbies and from time to time may get a little snarky but as Jean said - you never met Rheinhard or Gerhart. I guess for both oldies and newbies if we got nothing good to say - say nothing.

Perhaps the best advice anyone could give is use the search function on the forum - many topics have been discussed before and in fact when you search very specific topics on google - the NMB comes up.

Enjoy what you like - appreciate what you want - everyone has their own tastes.

Because then we wouldn't be a discussion forum...we wouldn't be honest....we wouldn't be helping anyone.

Maybe you should go start a forum where everyone agrees and every item is wonderful?

The day we become so politically correct that we can't tell someone the truth about their blades..that day I will sell the forum to the various commercial interests that have enquired from time to time and go find another hobby. Until then, the serious collectors of Nihonto will say what they think, and seriously interested novices will listen. You know what they say about the heat and the kitchen, right?

PS - As per convention on just about every other forum I frequent, anyone who re-opens a closed thread will be suspended.
