steve69au Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 These mounts are off a sword i picked up a short time ago and was wonder for a little advice on weather to have the tsuka rewraped under the cover the wrap is about 40% deteriorated I have had the cover off once but its very fragile The Blade is signed Hizen no Kuni ju Ichimonji Hiroto and dated 1740 I was wondering would I add value to the sword if i had it rewraped or would I be best to leave it as found All the mount including the tsuka are numbered 71 not sure if that means anything thanks in advance Steve Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 IMO dont touch it. Make a oshigata and never take it apart again. Quote
george trotter Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Not being able to see the hilt and binding we are not really able to comment on whether to re-bind or leave it. My normal response is keep it "as is" if possible. One option is to slip off the surrender cover and preserve it separately....it was only put on at the time of surrender and is not normally part of the mountings, but certainly worthy of keeping with the sword. That way you can take the handle off to check the sword as/when required. only a suggestion, regards, Quote
steve69au Posted September 8, 2012 Author Report Posted September 8, 2012 Hi George The binding is pretty bad below is a photo i found of it from its original sale but i would say the cover has been removed a few time after that before i got it and the are bit of the wrap missing maybe carefully removing the cover and framing it in a double glass frame so you can see both side may help in keep it in good condition Steve Quote
Brian Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 Blade into shirasaya, mounts displayed with cover on. Logical thing to do. Brian Quote

If you put the blade into shirasaya there is no need to interfere with the mountings at all. Keep exactly as is. regards, Quote
bmoore1322 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Yes, like Brian said, put it into a Shirasaya mount, and display it that way, so that you would never have to mess with the Gunto mounts again, and not take any chances of causing them any more damage. I'm sure myself, and other members in here would love to see the Nakago, and signature. Brian Quote
