eugene walton Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 this I think is, seki- taisho era , 1912-1926 , it looks to be hand forged and watter temperd, but someone with a buffer "cleaned it up" the third kanji I could`t get Quote
mike yeon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 I don't know. Could be the picture quality but something about the mei/yasurimei/nakago does not look right. The yasurimei looks too uniform/deep. And the mei (though I could be wrong looks like gibberish at first glance). I hope I'm wrong but are you sure it's not a chinese fake? mike Quote
eugene walton Posted May 3, 2007 Author Report Posted May 3, 2007 it seems to well made to be a fake, also it has the shape of a sword that may have been in a kyu-gunto. :| Quote
stekemest Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 A picture of the kissaki could help to judge if it's a fake or not. The nakago looks strange to me, too... Quote
mike yeon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 I'm going to go with "not traditional nihonto". The lines don't look right. Having been buffed, this could alter things but the nakago and mei (which I think reads "something, DAI MASA?") just don't look right. My 2 cents. Hope I'm wrong. Can you post a pict of the entire nakago? mike Quote
QuangD Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 eugene walton, The sword look mumei to me...the signature is added on later....Someone thought it could sell better if there is a mei go on the tang. He/she could add the signature on the tang.. That is my opinion. Quang Quote
mike yeon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 How long is the nakago? It looks super long.... And the nagasa? Still looks like a repro to me. mike Quote
mike yeon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 So almost 11 inches. Definitely not made for a kyu-gunto. How long is the nagasa? mike Quote
eugene walton Posted May 3, 2007 Author Report Posted May 3, 2007 27cm=10 7/16in , nagasa-70cm-27 9/16in...e-bay item #220103363418, now Quote
Stephen Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 it would be big stretch for showa to....no doubt a repo . Quote
Mark Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 could this be a Paul Chen, or similar sword? the width of the nakago looks strange when compared with the blade width (reminds me of Hankei ). The blade looks better than a modern Chinese copy but some of the "martial arts" practical swords i have seen have temper and reasonable shape. Mark Jones Quote
mike yeon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 could this be a Paul Chen, or similar sword? I think the habaki was made to look antique. So don't think this is the case. mike Quote
eugene walton Posted May 3, 2007 Author Report Posted May 3, 2007 I was awere the fittings are new, Quote
mike yeon Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 I'm not a fittings or production sword guy but isn't that a paul chen tsuba? mike Quote
eugene walton Posted May 3, 2007 Author Report Posted May 3, 2007 no it`s copper, P.C. are all steel Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 The rust pattern isn't at all consistent, either, so I doubt that it's "real" by Nihonto standards. The mei also looks almost too perfect, even if I can't translate it. I wonder why anyone would try to disguise/mimic/masquerade a sword with an otherwise authentic-looking nagasa? Quote
eugene walton Posted May 4, 2007 Author Report Posted May 4, 2007 the seller claimed to have purchesed this sword in seki city Japan Quote
