k morita Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 The mei says "Hodota zo, 12 ". 保土田造十二 Quote
Viper6924 Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 Thank You very much for Your translation Morita-San. Makes life so much easier :D After a quick search I found some other work. Hodota seems to be the name of the company/maker. Just wonder what the "12" means. Perhaps size? Thanks again! Jan Quote
k morita Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 Maybe 12 means "12th generation Chin Jukan",ceramist in Kagoshima. And, Hodota seems to be the name of the export company/maker in Yokohama. Quote
Viper6924 Posted August 11, 2012 Author Report Posted August 11, 2012 Thanks again for helping me, Morita-san. Yes I also found some info to about Hodota being an company/maker based In Yokohama. Seems to have produced pretty high quality products. But that "12" is still a bit of a mystery. I also wonder what the word "zo"means in this context. Thanks! Jan Quote
Brian Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 Jan, Morita san is telling you that the 12 means he is signing as the 12th generation of that school/line. Brian Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Good morning Jan This may help: http://gotheborg.com/marks/index_jap_marks.htm Meizan Hododa (sic) is about a quarter of the way down the Satsuma link which is on the left nav bar. Cheers Quote
Viper6924 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 Thanks for the great link, Malcom. Half the fun of collecting things is the research to try to find out more about the object. I include two pictures of the complete koro. Notice the Tokugawa-mon on the rim. A bit funny considering that Satsuma and Tokugawa wasn´t always the best of friends :D /Jan Quote
k morita Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 As I mentioned already, 12th gen Chin Jukan(1835-1906) is a ceramist in most late Edo period to Meiji period. Your's is a Koro(not vase) for export in Meiji era. Quote
Viper6924 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 Yes, Morita-san. Thanks to all the help and some research done by myself, the picture is getting clear. Thanks again for all the effort! Jan Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Good afternoon Jan, I wouldn't read too much into the choice of design motifs......Satsuma,Tokugawa etc. Ceramics bearing the Satsuma Kamon were made well outside of the borders of Kyushu. Items for export were often variously decorated with obscure and unrelated themes. The product of which, it may be suggested, inspired a whole design movement in the West known as Japonism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japonism Cheers Quote
Viper6924 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 True that, Malcom  I like it because it´s made during an intresting time in Japanese pro-samurai era. And to be a little honest... I enjoy the looks of it /Jan Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 De gustibus non est disputandum....... Cheers Quote
Viper6924 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 Had to Google that one But You are right again, Malcom! /Jan Quote
