gun addict Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Was at a pawnshop today when i came by this naval Wakizashi. I could not get a rub of the nakago so i wrote down what i can of the mei. Need some expert's help out on this blade, granted that the pictures are atrocitous but i only had a phone on me at the time. The owner was asking $400 for it which i thought was fair as the mountings are all in good condition, except the missing ray skin cover , menuki and wrappings Quote
Jiro49 Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Looks like a Chinese copy to me and a bad one at that... Just my opinion! Quote
gun addict Posted August 10, 2012 Author Report Posted August 10, 2012 Did the translation and it comes to Bishu osafune sukesada , the tip of the blade has been rounded due to heavy use but i dont think there is any doubt on it being a nihon-to. But then agani, my opinion only, and am open to all opinions http://nihontoclub.com/smiths/SUK946 Quote
runagmc Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 It looks like the tip of the kissaki has been broken and badly reshaped...unless I'm seeing things. I would recommend finding something in better condition... Quote
Brian Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 If the tip of the sword is as it appears in the pic, that is a deal breaker. Fatal flaw, and I would pass. It isn't a Kai Gunto either, that is some wierd modern tsuba/o-seppa combo. The package isn't all that appealing, and there is nothing that can be done to repair that kissaki. Brian Quote
Jiro49 Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Is it broken? It just looks like a chinese kissaki to me with the straight edge to it? Quote
Jamie Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Kissaki looks to have problems from the pics, but it's hard to tell without the sword in hand. If you are determined you might take a better pic of the kissaki. My opinion is- that it depends on your motivation. If buying for resale- you may get lucky and someone may give you 6 for it. Or maybe not. If buying for yourself and to study nihonto, i'd think a book or saving and adding some funds and buying something in polish would be a better use of funds. Just my.02 and it's probably worth what it cost you. Quote
gun addict Posted August 10, 2012 Author Report Posted August 10, 2012 I did not intend to buy it for resale but more of a collection piece as i havnt seen many naval Wakizashis around. However the reshaped kassaki is definately a no go for me and the condition of the blade is in is again a deal breaker Thanks for all the help Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 Broken tip thats why its a "wak" size. 400 usd is way to much. 50 usd is ok. Looks like mixed parts. Quote
