Christophe Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Hi, I discovered the Japanese swords there are now 6 years thanks to a friend I follow the forum Nihonto recently and since learns every time something new. I thank all involved for this. I come for the first time now asking for your help for a tanto that I bought 15 days ago. I think this is a modern blade from the Nakago. Can you help me to identify this tanto ? (it's area of origin or the smith school? )Is There a book with information about new Japanese sword? Thank's very much for your help Quote
NihontoEurope Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Hello, It helps if you give us photos to start with. Measurements would be nice to have too. I cannot see any uploaded images. /Martin Quote

Tcat Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 This nakago looks like it has been "cleaned" and the patina has been removed. From the look of the hi (cut channels in the blade) the blade has seen a few polishes... Quote
Christophe Posted August 9, 2012 Author Report Posted August 9, 2012 Thanks, I was thinking of the few polish because on one side the the cut channel is almost gone, but not that the nakago had been cleaned, it means this tanto is perhaps older than I was thinking Christ Quote
NihontoEurope Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Hello, Shin-shinto blade and yes, unfortunately cleaned. If you wait another 300 years the patina will come back to you. Maybe a Mino blade with kesho yasurime as it appears. Kanefusa school? It is not a school or region that I have studied so hard, but there will be more advanced collectors here that may give you an answer. /Martin Quote
Jacques Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Hi, Due to the yakidashi, i would say Shinto rather than Shinshinto. Mino is a reasonable option. Quote
Christophe Posted August 10, 2012 Author Report Posted August 10, 2012 Martin, Dirk, Jacques, thank's very much for the infos. Christ Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 I agree mino and late Shinto to early shinshinto. Quote
Peter Bleed Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 I think this discussion is being too heavily influenced by the cleaned nakago. Who was making "mino tanto" in Shinto times? I'd vote for an intentionally 'old' looking shinshinto. But depending on how much age is put on the tang when it is repatinated (and it will be!) late koto could be reasonable. Peter Quote
runagmc Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Quote I'd vote for an intentionally 'old' looking shinshinto me too... Quote
