Greetings everyone, I found myself re-reading a passage from the Art of the Samurai and found this statement: “Along the Edo Period..practice swordplay, swords of wood or bamboo were devised. This new activity was reflected in the design of real swords, which, as the memory of actual warfare became fainter, grew straighter and progressively narrower toward the point. Tempering patterns became more flamboyant and picturesque, includ- ing the newly devised tõran-ba” I'm wondering if there are any clear examples of this trend, or if it was a trend at all. Hello all! first post. I’ve been hanging out on a few Facebook pages for Nihonto and get great advice. Ray singer has been particularly helpful. Recently, I’ve gotten a interesting sword from a local to me auction. I’ve gotten opinions of everything from 1500s to oil quenched showato. I’m happy with whatever it is but being a newbie… I’m trying to understand what I have. I bought several books from Martin sesko but I’m still learning. There are no stamps anywhere on the blade whatsoever. Like I said you may have seen this on FB, but I’m posting here in hopes the images upload in higher quality. Thank you for your time.

Hello! I've done my best to translate the writing on the tang of my recently purchased Shin Gunto type 98. For a double check, since this is my 1st time trying to decipher kanji any confirmation would be welcome. It appears there is a SEKI stamp at the top, a kokuin saying Ozawa Kanehisa and I believe the signature to read, Ozawa Kanehisa Saku...but I'm not 100% sure I got everything on that translation. Does anyone have any information on Ozawa Kanehisa? I know this blade is non-traditional but has anyone heard of his style of blade maxing....I assume western steel and oil quenched. If anyone has any insights I would love to hear them. This is for my personal collection and I do not plan on reselling it. Thank you!

Hello to everyone, This is my first post on subjects other than Japanese swords and I am really devoid of knowledge about this kind of art. So: Here is a bronze tiger statue I have, I bought it years ago. I was told it is called a "double patina" statue and It is from meiji era. It is also "signed", I have already seen this signature on other statues but also, as I am not Japanese speaker, I can't find anything on google. It measures 45,5 cm (17,71654 inches) from the tail to the head and 20,5 cm (7,874016 inches) of heigt (from the front paw to the nose) I would love if you guys tell me what's the real value of this and would really appreciate to know some history about the maker and this type of statue. I am sorry if it is not the right category to talk about this. Thank you really much Carl

Hello, first time here finding this all fascinating! i was wondering if anyone could help with shedding some light on what these markings mean. Photos are not great as my sister took them and sent to me so difficult to see the marks clearly. ive yet to get my hands physically on it as still arranging import. The story: Ive just inherited this. Grandfather acquired this sword in Singapore in 1945 at the Japanese surrender. we even have a picture of him climbing back aboard his vsl holding the sword.(see below) (modelling below is my nephew) Apparently they had it made blunt many years ago as worried an intruder might use it... Looks to me like a Army Type 98.officer sword...although the tassel is more of an NCO type... and i think attached to the wrong part at the moment. although its not a tassel as such but a leather thing. But im after anymore information that you can shed on this especially on the characters on the Tang and the handle. im devouring the other threads for further knowledge and info! Many thanks indeed!
