  1. I like the way you can see the dragonflies body through its seemingly transparent wing.
  2. Thanks to you and the others for your work
  3. Powerfully sensitive work, and yes I was wondering how menuki were made.
  4. I placed a craigslist ad hunting swords and only got a lot of fishy responses, including one from Powel Nowak.
  5. Having a thread of book recommendations is something I have wanted for awhile, finding out what books are best for the untutored and at a reasonable price would be nice.
  6. Does it ring at all when you hit it with a fingernail?
  7. Doug, I cannot read the language and don't know much about these things but this site will tell you a bit about such things and what you would expect to see on such a card- http://www.jssus.org/nkp/japanese_sword_laws.html
  8. Doug e - It looks like a registration card, all traditional swords in Japan are supposed to have them. It will be turned into authorities before shipping out of the country.
  9. Some of those pics are gonna make nice wallpapers :D :D
  10. The illusion of motion in the floating leaves on Hamish's tsuba is really well done.
  11. Have you done a search on this site for this sellers name?
  12. I think he would have gotten no bids if members had not vouched for him, the combination of no feedback, pics that in some cases look like they came from a book, and a description that bounced between proper Japanese and common English terms for the parts probably made folks nervous.
  13. I would not buy any bladed weapon from that seller without seeing it in hand and that is too far to travel. I have bought some armor parts from that seller that I felt good about but their blades seem either low end real or outright fakes. Do not be in a hurry to spend, study more, look more and save your money for one you will value a long time.
  14. "Same" Sah-meh I think is how it is pronounced is the skin off the back of a ray. Edit to add that I did not see Toby's post so mine is redundant
  15. I used to have jumonji-yari many years ago with a short stub of the original shaft that was made of laminated bamboo as Ian described. I imagine it was a very light and strong spear shaft.
  16. I think it is just an autotranslater thing but I am guessing. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.seiyudo.com%2Ftanto.htm
  17. This is especially true as we are a very international board and it is surprising we communicate so well.
  18. Your dinner looks so good. I had home made sauerkraut and brown rice. If you eat cheaply you can spend more on swords. :D
  19. It is beautiful in its own way. Do you know how it was found? Looks like it was resting in a river.
  20. I can see the practical nature of the yari tanto in combat but I wonder how the yari katana was used and why it was made. Would it be useful in the same manner as a regular katana? Did someone without funds need a sword and make do with an available yari blade or did he really want it like this. I do enjoy seeing such odd weapons.
  21. I would have said shuriken but Greg's idea is better. Here is another. http://cgi.ebay.com/Japanese-15mm-w-Shu ... 2eaad5fd55
  22. This shocks me. Subtitled or dubbed into French?
  23. The rust on the tang portion is part of the blades history and is part of what folks look at to judge age, removing it it is a bad idea and some blades have had their value lessened by well meaning "improvements". I think there is a natural human desire to clean stuff off, but don't do it. That said, post pics so the more knowledgeable can give you their opinions on what it is.
  24. I will admit I am pretty ignorant about this subject and should be more careful about my posting. I apologize for that post Kevin.
  25. That's at least the third "muramasa" tanto on the bay this winter . They are falling like leaves, so common. There is also a "masamune" if you look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT I think I would do better at the local garage sales.
