    Unusual Tsuba

I've posted in the mokume thread, but I thought it's better to start a new thread about this tsuba. Chris said that the mei was Tsuguhira, but to my eyes it doesn't look like Tsuguhira (by comparing to the Tsuguhira mei posted in another thread). Anyways, tsuba was purchased from Todd (fellow board member) and recently had patina work done by Patrick Hastings (thanks to Ford's referral). Looks like a mokume but pattern could be carved. I haven't seen a tsuba like this before. I was curious as how seppas would be used with this tsuba or even how a sword could be mounted due to the uneveness.
  6. Just got this back from Patrick Hastings for some patina work. Tsuba was purchased from todd from this board. Also thanks to Ford for pointing me in Patrick's direction for the patina work. Can't quite make out the mei. This looks like mokume but pattern could be carved. Very unusual tsuba imo.
  7. I believe John Grasso is the name you're thinking of.
  8. Thanks! "Kofu ju" is what's inscribed on the right of the nakagoana.
  9. I bought a very similar tsuba. It's by Shigemitsu and it's very heavy. Picture is from the seller.
  10. What about this from the same seller?
  11. I think you can see faint remnants of gold on the flowers.
  12. I think the point of the original post was finding an alternative to Ebay because of the costs associated with using it. There aren't many choices to get the maximum audience desired when trying to sell something. You either don't care about maximizing profits, then you can sell the item anywhere. And If you do care about maximizing profits, then you need a big audience.
  13. To counteract Ebay's fees, many sellers add a handling charge or increase shipping costs.
  14. The pictures are just a tad too small.

  16. Not Kanefusa. Looks like Kanehide.
  17. If you are going to scan, use a dark cloth as the background.
  18. Jason, you should be looking at buying more books before you think about buying nihonto.
  19. I was told by the seller that the item in question will be relisted after some research has been done.
  20. Paul's website isn't displayed properly in Firefox. The left frame content is aligned too low where most of the links are cut off and unviewable to Firefox running at 800 pixels or less in vertical resolution. However under Safari, it looks fine.
  21. The seller cancelled the auction to be relisted later after more research can be done. Maybe the seller will be visiting NMB to sought out some information. I've looked at the oshigata from Fujishiro and I'm very sure it's gimei. One particular kanji was missing a couple of strokes. And if Grey is right about the date, it's a couple of hundred years later than it ought to be.
  22. The dangers of chargeback if shipped to the Paypal verified address is low. As long as you follow Paypal's shipping policies, you should have no problems as long as you keep all records of shipment.
  23. I looked at a couple of tsubas that seller was peddling on Ebay and they all look like repros.
  24. According to Sloughs, Masanobu made low to medium grade showato.
