  2. Hello Gents I wonder if anyone has seen one of these before it's an outer metal core with the wooden inner tsuka . It is katana size . Any information on what it is called or pics would be much appreciated, Markus has said he has seen a few and some even with into although I can not find any on the net. Regards Peter
  3. Thank you gentlemen for your insights,I think John view possibly pointed directly to a reason why the cut test where performed when they where as a way of reintroducing an interest in having a sword even though at that time there where no battles to be fought and perhaps also sparking this collecting bug we now have in their beauty rather than their life taking or life saving abilities. Peter
  4. Thank you Ken and for the link, so in the 1800's they felt it appropriate to test ancient blades from 500 years old or more ? Peter
  5. Hello Anyone ever heard or thought of when and how the sharpness ranking came into play ? Just has me thinking since I have just had wakizashi papered to Bizen Hidemitsu and he is rated Seijo-Owazamono. (highest cutting ability). And the blade is dated Eitoku 1381-84 Peter
  6. Tanto is now sold. Thank you all. Peter
  7. Thank you gents for clearing that up. Passwords and log ins are not something I always remember. Please Brian if you could delete the old login details and perhaps send me new ones so I can continue to use the more active one Many thanks Peter
  8. Hi Ken Thank you for your reply, I have been collecting Nihonto now for around 10 years and NMB was the first place I visited on a daily basis and actually won a book on its yearly prize draw, I don't get a chance much these days to visit the site. My friend and I set up https://www.facebook.com/tokensocietyireland/ For anyone interested in Nihonto in Ireland. As for the blade I know nothing and thought it to be a quite unusual shape for a tanto of this size. I have a number of blades I may want to sell but even if this one doesn't sell I would appreciate any contribution from members on this piece . Many thanks Peter

    Hira-zukuri

Evening gents, as requested an update on this Tanto. I put it in for NTHK-NPO shinsa and it passed as Mito Noritoshi 1st gen. (1681-1684) a descendant of Norishige so some good guesses from members, Then just because i was curious it went in for Shinsa with the NBTHK and they attributed it to Nakayama Yoshimichi (1844-1848) adopted son of Ikkansai Yoshihiro 2 attributions 200 years apart. so good guesses all round gents Peter

  15. Hello All, I recently purchased a Wakizashi. Bichu no kami ...clan ...smiths name on reverse . Mino Seki no oite kore so tsukuru Could some one tell me what the meaning of these words are? one province seems to conflict with the other, Mino/Bichu or put a link to a site that would explain them , Many thanks Peter
  16. Hi David, They must have been nice tsubas, I like the pics so far. Peter
  17. Hi George I will certainly do that, just frustrating, i actually thought it may have been this one, with the Tang reference to ''Tokyo'' in the first month of Kyōhō six (1721), the eighth Tokugawa-shōgun Yoshimune (徳川吉宗, 1684-1751) invited the best smiths of the countries to a sword forging contest to his Edo residence, the winners were besides of Masakiyo Ippei Yasuyo (安代), Nobukuni Shigekane (信国重包) from Chikuzen, and the 4th generation Nanki Shigekuni (南紀重国), all of them were granted a single leaf of the Tokugawa aoi crest to be signed on their sword tangs, especially outstanding in this contest were Masakiyo an Yasuyo who enjoyed subsequently a veritable program consisting of recommendations and orders, the honorary title „Mondo no Shō“ (主水正) was granted to him on the 13th day of the seventh month of the same year (1721), he died on the sixth day of the sixth month Kyōhō 15 (1730) at the age of 61, ( thanks Mariusz for ref, from Markus book?) but seems a little early. maybe this one stayed in Tokyo and had a son :-) Peter
  18. Another.
  19. Hello again Gents, An up date on the Tanto, Thanks to Mr Paul Martin it received Hozon Papers, but here is the bummer not even the shinsa team would give a definite on the ''Kiyo'' and left it open . they have placed it as shin-shinto which i suppose with mention of Tokyo on the tang was a heads up as it was Edo until 1868, although with a lot of help from board members, Books and www. i am no further on pinpointing the smith in question, even with the name, era, and residence, (Sanuki/Sanshu) . Many thanks to all involved, Peter

    Muramasa Website

Great job Derek I see with your examples they don't have the Tanagabara-gata (fish-belly) nakago which is meant to have been a characteristic of the Muramasa school or was this in later gererations or indeed when they branched of to the Shitahara school? Peter

    Muramasa

Hello All I to would like to know more on this school and smiths as I now have my item in hand I bought from Hoanh ( viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20149 ) I can not find much more than wiki has to say about the mad Muramasa and the sharpness of his blades, I thought there would be more on such an unusual nakago to try to ascertain a smith, school of indeed era, for my new piece, Any help as always much Appreciated, Peter
  24. Hello all, just came across these papers, could they be reunited with the correct tsuba if anyone recognises it. Peter http://www.ebay.com/itm/251638412952?ss ... 1423.l2648
