The "southern" Emperor Godiago was eventually overwhelmed by the would be usurper Emperor Komyo who had allied himself with Ashikaga Takauji. The ensuing period of almost 60 years saw battles in and around Kyoto and other mountainous areas in central Honshu. While the tachi was still the primary weapon, many naginata were used.
