  1. Similar to Robert I keep one on display and rest of the collection is in a safe.
  2. Welcome Aron there ain't nuthin' like the real deal. :D
  3. Believe this is an error on the site. The tsuba currently displayed are not those described. I have sent Fred a heads-up.
  4. Welcome Eric. I hope you enjoy the forum. I'd suggest you take your time, build a good library and vocabulary, don't be too anxious to buy anything until you've done some reading and studying. If there is a sword club in your area consider becoming a part of it. By all means check the archives on this board they are most useful on a variety of topics. Enjoy youself and have fun.
  5. Any book with an Akasaka tsuba on the cover has got to be great! :D
  6. Welcome Rob! I would suggest the first order of business is to build and library and a vocabulary of nihonto. :D
  7. I am far from an expert on menuki and Goto work in particular but your pieces do not show the level of detail and craftsmanship usually associated with Goto work. Just an opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it.
  8. Mikolaj, thank you for the reminder. I recall reading that but totally lost my storage and retrieval system. I have seen your tsuba in Dr. Torigoye's work and one other book whose title escapses me at the moment. There is also a similar Akasaka example extant. Thanks for sharing it. :D
  9. What am I missing here, Henry? This tsuba looks to be a nice later generation entry level Akasaka combining common design elements in an interesting way. Is there something lurking somewhere? Colin, don't dispair just make Fred an offer and that tsuba may yet move to the Pacific Northwest.
  10. I wonder how many times a dealer has sold the same sword?
  11. Mikolaj, what is the source of your information regarding the interface between Tosa Myochin and Akasaka?
  12. So you have noted on more than one occasion.
  13. Mikkolaj, is your first tsuba papered to Tosa Myochin? Just curious as the group is often credited with copying Akasaka designs.
  14. Neil, have you started a basic library of tried and true nihonto books? Is there a Japanese sword group in your area that you can join? Can you visit periodic shows or museums with nihonto collections. All of this will help make your learning curve less steep...and be careful about putting too much stock in some of the opinions you read here. Read and think critically and remember what you read here usually is just opinion. Many of which are quite credible and many of which are not. Learn as you go and come to trust your own judgement. Welocome to the group and start plowing through the archives here.
  15. Thanks Martin that's fun to look at. Boris, your pair have won my heart. I will match Curran's offer of the lightsaber and I'll throw in a pair of custom engraved Phasers that were the personal side arms of a distinguished Starfleet Admiral. Curran, I'll work on the photos when I'm not so lazy just wanted to contribute to "show and tell."
  16. I also have a preference for pigiron. Here are three of my current group.
  17. Ahhhhhhhhh, Curran you are sooooooo fickle. That being the case I shall sit quietly and wait for you to tire of that Ko-Akasaka. I'll post my favorites of the moment after the Chicago show.

    Umetada Tsuba

Lovely piece of work with a peaceful theme for a peaceful time.
  19. Jason, be careful around tsuba they are known to lead one toward the dark side...
  20. Errrrrrrrrr, Mariusz, wasn't the wakazashi preferred over the katana for beheadings :D
  21. ububob

    Unusual wakizashi

Jean, I am glad you mentioned catch and release lest I rain critcism upon your person. On the spine of a knife it would pass for a saw. I have an old survival knife with just such a set up.
  22. Yes, one could but that wasn't the question posed.
  23. Brian, is there a capability to backup PMs yet? An upgrade was mentioned some time ago.
  24. ububob
