    Punch marks.

Christian, not to worry. Pete understood my jest completely. The highest level of fluency in any language is understanding the humor. :D

    Punch marks.

That is what I call scandalous self-promotion Peter! Here are some examples of what Christian is writing about.
  3. David, I like your scanner work. How did you suppress the shadows?
  4. Tobias, until you familiarize yourself with the vocabulary of nihonto you are really not prepared to buy anything other than books to do more studying.
  5. Welcome Steve and I hope you enjoy the forum. Be sure to check out the archives there many valuable gems in there. :D
  6. Even if potential buyers have knowledge they are still well advised to stay away from Ebay and stick with reputable dealers.
  7. That was a remarkable experience to be able to get up close and personal with all 16 generations with a running dialogue from Mike Yamasaki and Bob Benson.
  8. When you buy on Ebay you deserve what you get. In this case my guess would be very late Edo possibly Meiji and mediocre work. If you want to see what real detail looks like search out some Goto, Yoshioka, Ko-Mino et al pieces and you will see the difference. Remember, this is just my opinion and worth every cent you paid for it.
  9. Wrong Pete! He's a short copy of Brain Wilson with an attitude. ...and thanks for introducing me to that new tool---the rice hatchet.
  10. Malcom, again my sincere thanks for maintaining this effort. :D
  11. Lance, the kotoji form the bridges of the Koto (Japanese harp) and are emblematic of harmony.
  12. Christian, you post a nice signed Tadashige and I'm willing to bet that Hawley's is an Akasaka too. :D
  13. Christian, what is it you wish to have confirmed? If Hawley doesn't respond in a reasonable time, I will take a shot at it.
  14. How many more of these will you be posting?
  15. Ed, without having the tsuba in hand I would guess that it has been mounted. That is suggested by the presence of punch marks and sekigane at the ha and mune ends of the nakago ana.
  16. That is a real stunner Rich. It can take my mind off Akasaka for a while... :D
  17. This is another of my favorities which may have some interest for Mantisdude.
  18. ...and H.L.Mencken reminds us, "Nobody ever went broke undestimating the taste of the American public."
  19. A great show! Don't miss it. sfshow.pdf
  20. I will miss benefit of your experience but I will also look forward to the book.
  21. Some time ago I was asked to post better pictures of an interesting Akasaka tsuba that could be 3rd or 4th generation with dimensions of 7.4cm X 7.1cm X .65cm. The most interesting part is the origami which uses the term keritsuke mei. More experienced heads than mine tell me this is rather unusual to find in tsuba paper. The tsuba photos should be ok but the origami has been difficult to resize... Resized Images.zip
  22. truelotus, a custom and courtesy observed on this forum is signing of all posts with a real name as Keith did above. You can make that change in your profile. ...and welcome aboard. :D
  23. $100 at the site Brian listed.
  24. You might also hunt up Japanese Art Motives by Maude Rex Allen. That book a lot of info on symbolism. Be sure to locate the 1917 version. More current reprint is done with early OCR software and lack illustrations.
  25. Good site. There are several more out there if one Googles kanji writing, stroke order etc. Most of the major universities in the US with Asian Studies programs have sites to assist kanji learners. One of my favorites is http://www.dartmouth.edu/~kanji
