  1. November 2017 is a long way off, but good to plan in advance. Has the date for the 2017 DTI been released? Thanks!
  2. Takes 5 mins to walk from NBTHK to Aoi's shop (at least it did before NBTHK moves), so i figure Mr Tsuruta has a great resource. If he thought it would pass he would have submitted, it is easy for him and would have made a big difference in price/value and he is in business to make money. Everyone makes mistakes but doubt it in this case that being said, it is a nice shape (i like that type) and looks like a nice sword to enjoy
  3. i think Kanemune
  4. mei is poorly written. My guess is BiShu Osafune SukeSada ( i think the Sada is correct but the Suke kanji is questionable)
  5. i think it is Echizen no kami Minamoto NobuYoshi well known Shinto smith, usually used a Kikumon...if so the condition of the nakago is an issue. Maker also used Rai in his mei
  6. i sold a late navy with lacquered wood saya to a buyer in France. I packed it carefully. When it arrived the saya was broken so the buyer returned it. when i got it back and looked the saya was in 2 pieces broken 6" from the end, the blade was not bent. The only way this could have happened was customs in France opened it, someone said i wonder if this is sharp and tried a cutting test on the saya and cut right through, then sort of put it together and sent it to the buyer. bummer.
  7. Thanks Steve, that makes sense, I will remember that
  8. i came across a sword that has a surrender tag with unusual "stamped kanji". I think i can read Katsuyoshi, but have not seen tags with anything stamped on them. Is this usual? What does the stamp say? thanks!
  9. any ideas?
  10. i have a tanto, signed BuShu Ju Minamoto Masatsugu. No date but I am thinking ShinShinto. There are kanji on the blade. Can't make much from it, can anyone help? Thanks
  11. maybe maker is Kanemoto? not sure about the place. That type of mounting usually has Showa gendai blades
  12. is there a picture of the mei?
  13. i think both things are true. 1. You could always get a quality koshirae if you had the money and access. 2. As a general rule quality deteriorated with time. 3. You should not assume a gunto is late or early just on the quality of the koshirae
  14. there is a club in SoCal, you should be able to find info online, or maybe someone here is a member. you can take it to a meeting and get multiple opinions
  15. Chris and Joe's lecture was interesting. I learned a lot about the background and interactions of the smiths before and during WWII, thanks to both of you, great presentation
  16. Registered Mail has insurance at that amount and higher. It is not as fast as Express
  17. if looking for books check http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com Grey is a good guy and a member here, if he does not have something he can usually get it for you
  18. old system the lowest rank papers were white, the next higher level were green
  19. thing i cant wrap my mind around is NO HABAKI.... Would the Japanese do this even with a prototype? makes no sense, the habaki holds the blade in the saya, it centers it and makes a tight fit so no rattle. I can understand the possibility of the rest but not that
  20. Loyer was not interested in my swords so check http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/20429-sword-listed-on-eaby/
