  1. Dear Members, Have this naval dirk but was trying to date it. It looks custom made, includes same to the grip, four leaf cherry blossom design. Reminds me of an 1883 model sword I had once. Any help and info woud be great, thanks, ED
  2. Dear members, This shirasaya holds a blade signed Daido though i realize it may be gimei i am interested in knowing what the writing on the saya translate to. Maybe a location and owner or where the blade came from etc.? Your assistance is appreciated. I have included the signature on the blade. Thank You, Ed
  3. Dear Lance, Thank you for participating and your time. When I first examined the sword I experienced a balance to it. Then, I was impressed by the quality of the urushi though worn. As I examined it further I noted the gold foil seppa, and solid silver fittings together with what appeared to be decent worhmanship of the brass open-work three demensional tsuba. I was coming to an opinion that it may have been owned by a rich merchant or if a boys sword, which i'm still unclear on was a quality custom mounted piece of the earl 19th century. I have posted the Tsuba on the Tosogu topic in the hope I can get some feedback. Thanks again, ED
  4. Dear Members, Attempting to research the smith of this tsuba. Am wondering what your opinion is of the quality of workmanship and period of this Hikone piece. I have found a Goto kishu and a Bamen Tsunemasa on the JSL index, but nothing more, of what I guess may be related to the Soten schools, there were a few I guess. Can anyone shed some light or point me in a direction? Thank you in advance, Ed.
  5. Thanks Markus,Ed
  6. Dear Jim, Thank you very much for participating. The sword will be offered for sale I believe this summer. I am assisting the owners (heirs), to catalogue their collection. They have decided to put the collection on an auction block but have not yet selected one. I can keep you posted if you so desire. Thanks again, Ed Can you estimate the age? The tsuba is signed hikone ju tsunemasa, don't know if i included that. Ed
  7. Dear cabowen, thanks very much do you have any idea of a school? Ed
  8. Dear members, I have this handachi in solid silver fittings en-suite, carved openwork dragon tsuba, and inlaid/engraved copper menuki with an attractive lacquered saya. I am wondering if the lacquer is known as wakasa nuri? In addition, I wondered how old it might be if possible. Someone referred to it as a boy sword?? possibly because of its size. The menuki are very attractive copper with silver inlay, gold inlay eyes and a gold gilt chick. Any info regarding the menuki would be helpful as well. It seems to me to be nicely made. Thanks.Ed
  9. Dear members having some difficulty with this one. It is a tsuba and i'm stumped on the first character and not sure of the second one. ?, nami, ju. Tsune, Masa. Any input will be appreciated, thanks Ed.
  10. Thanks to both chris and Brian on on board with that. thanks Ed
  11. Hi Chris, regarding this blade the kasane is 6mm in front of the habaki. Ed
  12. Dear Kieth, thank you for the clarification and your participation. What you have explained including the period of the blade makes perfect sense. Thank you very much. Ed.
  13. Dear Adam, Thanks again, the file marks are katte sagari, i'm going to look at the blade characteristics from the above suggested areas. Ed
  14. Hi Mariusz, Is this any better? I'm playing w/scanner. Ed
  15. Dear Barry, I know that I am not qualified for such “quality” kantei points but had the following thoughts; 1. Should the model be limited to a school, tradition and period of a blade? 2. If you had an early Yamato masame hada blade with a small ware kizu which you might expect to find, would that be a negative? 3. Would you develop a point based model with variables and weights? Ed
  16. Dear Mariusz, I have the gear but as you know it needs to be staged. I plan on doing this please be patient. I may try to experiment with my scanner to capture the characteristics you are looking for. The only thing I will likely have a problem with is the hada. I have spent hours studying the blade and am concluding it might be masame with slight undulation but difficult to be sure. An quick look suggests muji but in small amount in certian areas appear to exhibit it. Thanks,Ed
  17. Dear Adam, Thank you for your participation and input. Two things that stand out to me is that with blade in hand it evokes an immediate sense of wieght and strength (durability and confidence). The second thing is a wider than normal kasane and a significant turn-back (tempering), of the boshi on the mune side. I'm in a learning mode and by no means an expert at this. In any event, I'm interested and appreciate anything you may have to say. Thanks,Ed
  18. Dear Mariusz, Thanks for your inquiry, Would you like me to enlarge or concentrate on specific areas? What is your pleasure? Ed
  19. Dear George M., Thank you very much for that explanation it makes more sense en suite and confirms in my mind that the mountings were obviously well thought. Thanks again, Ed
  20. Dear Members, I Am wondering if anyone has an opinion (or corrections), on this mumei yoroi-doshi blade that is 28.5cm long, the nagasa is 19.2cm, kasane at habaki is 6mm, musori, hirazukuri with iori hikushi mune. I am thinking shinto and have no idea of the school. I have also included a pic of the koshirae. Was wondering about the age. Any input or discussion is welcome. Thanks, ED
  21. Dear Geraint, thanks for the link! Wow, that powerfull among other things. Ed
  22. Dear Ian, If you happen back to tthis thread, Which coronation were you referring to, Mutsohito or Yoshihito? Thanks, Ed
  23. Jim, Thanks for that, I will be posting the blade in nihonto when ready in case you are interested. Ed
  24. Hi Mariuz, Thank you for that definition, The nagasa is 7-5/8" Ed inches and the nakago is short. Here is the koshirae. Any ideas as to age of the koshirae? though short, it is very hefty, Edit the kasane at the habaki is 6mm.
  25. Dear Jim, thank you very much for your assistance and time. I hope you forgive my ignorance, i'm new to this. What you have said makes sense to me now however, I don't know what you are referring to with "yoroi doshi", would you mind explaining? Thanks, Ed
