well this thread seemed to have been bumped, but I'll state my dreams anyways so it would be back on topic. a kazaritachi owned by ashikaga takauji. a pristine chokuto. my wak before it got shortened. a nodachi with a blade over 200cm. and for the most realistic one, a certain katana I saw in utrecht mounted in a kenukigata style koshirae (If someone knows what I am talking about, I was not able to find it listed online)

I think the shape of the blade is nice, however I don't think remounting it as a tanto would be worth it. I have actually not even heard of stuff being suriaged in modern day.
-
Glad that it has no fatal flaws, shame the rust has to be just on the most important part. If (or rather when) it is polished, I assume you might try to submit it?

Beautiful Sunobi Tanto Shimosaka Sadatsugu

It is all up to my likes, The koshirae is especially nice. It would match up well with my wakizashi, but I doubt that it is from the same school. Shame I am still a student ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good luck with the sale. -
Received a kyu-gunto; knowledge appreciated!

not by togishi of course, but I have read about people restoring gunto before. As I said before I do not really know the market. That one in Utrecht was high grade though, but it had an older blade within. But it had the same style of "cavalry" handle but with what looked like samegawa. -

Hello Cody, Welcome to the forum. The blade seems machine made, but the photos are a little blurry. Considering you keep guns, I don't think you will have any issues, just keep it in a dry and oiled with some light machine oil, though I am not sure whether the handle has lacquer work. I got to see a similar one at utrecht, it was in near mint condition, he was really proud of it. Considering you live in the states you could have it polished within the country, but it will still cost a sum. perhaps the scabbard can be restored as well. But I do not really know the market of these blades. I was told they're way more valuable than the later gunto. Someone like Bruce Pennington could give better advice. -
I saw a nice gendaito odachi on japanszwaard with that mon on the habaki. Unfortunately it is 6 times out of my price range, I'd still want to see it in person though.

Yeah, though I was a bit more invested into looking at the Ken. I had too little time to be honest. o, as to partake with the original topic Fav 3, it looks meaty, I like the size of the kissaki, makes one wonder how it originally looked. Worst 1, unlike 4 it doesn't that much going for it.

Please educate me on these swords and help me learn more about my heritage

Horimono looks good indeed. But the fact that it is work of a relative makes it greater. There's not that many people around who can say that. Congratulations. -

I fear I gave someone a terrible headache, 関住人各務行直作 back could be 為より in cursive. Not my field, I myself can't help further.

Went there, seen great stuff. I am glad I got to inspect a lot of great blades and koshirae! My only regret was not picking up that juyo, my eyes were tired at that point so it would've given me a wrong impression. It took me a while to notice but it seemingly still had its registration card on the shirasaya... I didn't really speak to active NMB members though. I did meet Charles White, pretty fun guy to talk with. He said he used to be on this forum years ago. Also attended a lecture on the Uda school to see how much I could actually understand, I was satisfied but I am far from being an expert. They had some technical issues but I can see that they put in some hard work putting it together. I did miss the last one, but by that time I came down with a pretty nasty headache which pretty much made my return trip home a hell. I have learnt three important things; My pockets will really never be deep enough, I like yoroi-doshi blades and Keiun Naohiro (the 5th) is someone I really wish to meet. I hope by the time I can do that he's still able to make a tanto. Overal the experience was good I'll probably attend next year's expo as well.

Woah woah woah, from the way you're saying it, it sounds like you are polishing yourself. No offense I just hope that's not the case, it couldn't just ruin the value of the blade it will. Togishi are highly respected and few in number for a reason. However on that collection, feel free to showcase it.

Is Saya Too Long for this Blade (Yari)?
Deiro replied to MikeyJ's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
hmm that might be the case considering the shape of a spear, but isn't such a thing considered taboo? -
Is Saya Too Long for this Blade (Yari)?
Deiro replied to MikeyJ's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
as expected it is the same one, I have seen a tachi with an impractical koshirae definitely meant to be the clothing for "showing off prestige". Though obviously yari are not meant to be carried like that, but perhaps someone just really appreciated his yari and to be honest how else will you get a whole dragon on it without compromising the design. I can't afford this piece but I do like it for the mountings alone. -
can't say much on the blade itself considering that it is likely a gimei. If it isn't the deviations are actually the strong points unless you're a school purist who wishes to have something to properly study as a benchmark, for my amateur eyes it looks great from a distance. and the mountings certainly looks good.
-
Are there no reputed people on this site who could act as middleman in that case? Damn... that certainly sounds good with how hard taxes suck here.
-
indeed, first time actually looking at yari mounts. I wonder what the "heart" design habaki stands for, it would be nice to know, is it some regional variant? I have seen it more on ken than other blades. Edit: I see, its religious symbolism.

I'd too aspire to own masterpieces but there's no such reality for me. I am still a novice and besides when I look for the top my perfectionism will get ahold of me and it will never be enough. sentiment is at times far stronger than reason, it could've been his first, a gift from a late friend or inherited. These blades have more value because you're more than just its curator. The blades my ancestors had were probably exported low grade works, probably now laying somewhere in the bay of tokyo. But if I could have them I would.

I normally just lurk around but yeah this condescending behavior is wrong, it drives people away. If we scale up this rhetoric, they in turn are small fry to those in Japan who own national treasures. Such a person could say: "A juyo simply failed to become a kokuho because it was not good enough, thus they are not worth owning." If this fails to convey why it is wrong I have no idea what to say. If they collect nihonto and appreciate the culture they should atleast have some tatamae. Well going at the actual naginata in question, would I buy it? Nope perhaps I would be tempted if I were to see it in hand whether I myself like it, I just never considered getting a naginata. As far as I see it is not rubbish but it is not special either, it got the hozon papers for a reason. I see these blades as once weapons and now art so my view might possibly invite disdain.

How nice, it would be worth to visit for me as well.

Wakizashi genuine signature/mei?
Deiro replied to VRGC's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
The menuki does look pretty. I think I'll keep that design in mind for the future. Personally I would not want to buy a blade without shirasaya though. No matter how much I love proper mountings, from all what I read they are improper for storage and it needs proper moisture. I have actually had some interest in buying loose koshirae (with those wooden blades in them) but I really do not know the market prices for such things. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could offer some enlightenment? -
That certainly does look pretty, will it match with that you will display? It is unfortunate the petal pattern on it isn't centered, those perfectionist eyes of mine just can't be helped though.
