I always feel the same with WW2 military stuff too! Especially the names of American military personnels... it's so hard to reverse-engineer them from katakana version published in 1940s. If you have time, I'd also like to recommend this paper, though it's all written in Japanese But it provides a good overview on the negotiation between GHQ/SCAP & Japanese government, so I'll just give you the link anyway.
