Thank you! That clears up a bunch of questions, I was just worried about having to turn in some sort of documentation before exporting it out. It’ll probably fly home with me as freight on my own metal out of NRT, packed really generously.

Would I need to go through any special sorts of paperwork to export armor out of Japan like I would with Nihonto? I would like to buy some while the dollar is still strong, and bring them back with me to the states. Considering freight forwarding, or flying there to pick it up myself. Flight cost is not a problem, I was just wondering if it is feasible before I make the effort. Thanks!

This was the only one I found, tried to see if I could get a whole set. I’m sure the rest are out there somewhere if I keep looking. Sadly when older collectors pass away, the families give away these books without knowing what they are. Which usually means they end up in 2nd hand donation stores like these. Hopefully they eventually find a good home with another collector who comes across them. Although we live in an age of readily available information at the tips of our fingers. It’s important to preserve these books, which laid the foundation of where we are today. The internet has been a revolutionary tool in making knowledge more readily available. But not everything will be digitally recorded. If a book that isn’t documented ends up lost or destroyed, We lose that information forever. The burning of the library of Alexandria has set back humanity at least 1000s of years. The same thing can happen for any recordable knowledge, and we must take measures to prevent that. As the NMB stated, we are very fortunate to have these resources online. But some books carry knowledge you can’t find anywhere else. PSA: PLEASE label your books and belongings for your families. So that they’re aware of its value and importance when you’re no longer here. To prevent them donating it to goodwill without knowing what they are. Also so that they get a fair price if they sell it.

Thank you guys for the insight! I put off on buying until I was sure, and decided to ask first. But it would’ve been a cheap paperweight nonetheless! They were asking $25 for all 4 I really appreciated the in depth analysis from Spartancrest, and ended up walking away with some valuable knowledge! Tsuba is just a whole sub genre that is way over my head at the moment, and I still have plenty to learn haha Ended up getting some other cool things (unrelated to Nihonto) while I was there, so the trip was not wasted!

Came across these at a thrift store of all places while looking for something completely unrelated to Nihonto. I’m not entirely knowledgeable on tsuba, can anyone tell me about them? They look to be real, but I can’t put my finger on it for certain.

Here’s the blade from earlier I acquired for study. Some of you guys some wanted higher quality pictures in a better light. Nihonto? Shinsakuto? Walmarto? I took some better pictures, for you guys. Mei looks to be gimei, probably need someone else to confirm the signature. Don’t know if I would consider this hada, does sort of resemble masame? Looks like a gimei shinsakuto to me, what do you guys think?

Yeah no worries! I’ll take some pictures of the mei when I get home for you guys. I ended up skipping it since the blade itself isn’t really that much in value considering the hagire (that I can see). There is about 3 other small chips in the blade that I assume are from someone chopping something with it. -

The massive price of a few hundred dollars at auction komonjo listed as gendaito, but I had reason to suspect something was up. I assumed it wasn’t legit and for the price, figured I could use it for study on repro’s sold by common and questionable eBay sellers without too much of a burn. The photos I took and gave you guys were meant to try and recreate the classic blue carpet photos that you usually see on his listings. I posted photos with no context to see if you guys can break down exactly what was wrong with it to try and simulate an actual komonjo listing, then reveal it at the end as a sort of experiment (with no money or the possibility of being burned at stake). Also I was looking for a second opinion, just in case I missed something. I hope this has been as educational for you guys as it has been for me. Thank you to everyone who replied! -

Here is a photo of the hagire. Also excuse any fingerprints, I let some self described “expert” fondle my collection, for the first and last time. I’m pretty sure they’ve all since been wiped off before I took pictures. -

I inherited a naval dirk from my grandfathers collection, the koshirae is in pristine condition. But the blade has a hagire and is a gimei of a big name. So the value of it is mainly in the koshirae. Any thoughts?
