  1. That really is a wonderful story. I really enjoyed it.
  2. Jason, I am going to have to agree with everybody else here. You ask about buried treasure. Your description is apt. You probably have about the same chance of finding a buried treasure as getting something good off of Ebay. Much better to look at the for sale area here if you have no other recourse. You will find good offers and some decent blades. Even better, would be to go a show so you can see the blades in hand and talk to people. The Midwest Token Kai is coming up and perhaps you could go to it.
  3. A very nice job, Mariusz.
  4. I can vouch for that. The two I got from him were very nice. :D P.S. and reasonable too.

    Tomotsugu

A very interesting Tsuba and although I really like antiquities, if it is modern as Ford thinks, I would be very happy to own it. :D

    Two Tsubas

Yes Brian, I have thought that it looks a lot like that whenever I am looking at it. I hadn't realized that Grey had been asking about the smilies until it got brought up here. A little ironic I got the tsuba from him.

    Two Tsubas

Hi, Here are my two newest pieces which I picked up at the Tampa show from the collection the Grey has been offering here. The first is a Heianjo from the Momoyama period with a ginger sprout design. The second one is an Ono from the early Edo with a rising and setting new moon. I really like this one because of the excellent condition of the surface and the fact that it is Mokume.
  8. Here is an authentic Higo that is very close. Got this pic from Andy Quirt's site.
  9. I think I have to agree with Grey. If the Japanese were making these pieces for western export, why are so many of them found in Japan and not in the west. Could it be that the makers really misunderstood what the west liked and so they didn't sell or was it because they just were expanding their techniques and interpretations?

    Two New Tsuba

Thanks for the reply. Guess these were not too interesting to people

    Two New Tsuba

I have recently bought two tsuba from a couple of board members (I am sure a few of you might recognize them) an Owari and a Shoami. Both I believe are early Edo but I would appreciate any comments or enlightenments that more experienced members may have about them. Thanks for any comments.
  12. Yeah, I saw that one a couple of days ago but thought it might not be the best idea to bring it up. Lots of these going around right now.
  13. It is always well to remember (as some people have already pointed out), you should buy the piece for the piece, not the signature. Obviously, you get what you pay for but if you like the piece and the price, then you should have no complaints. I also think that this is a new blade, but it does look pretty good. Is it worth $7777? That is something you have to answer for yourself.
  14. Actually, if you look at the description for the Masamune, it is a Sue-Mihara blade from the Muromachi and is not Gimei.
  15. Can't you read, it is not "just" a tanto but a "tanto sword knife spear samurai blade". Much more special. Must be something like an old Japanese Swiss army knife. BTW....... NICE "FIXED" TSUBA.
  16. Nope, just seems like another person trying to pull a fast one. Here is another item from his list ....... http://cgi.ebay.com/19thC-Black-Forest- ... 53dee39974
  17. My first reaction is that the ebay is such an obvious fake, that I hope he wasn't foolish enough to get caught buying it. My second is that if he did get burned, and is now trying to foist it off on someone else, he isn't much better than the person who burned him. It really is too bad this junk keeps increasing.

    New Sword

Gee Mark, Looks like you did have a very good day. Wish I had areas to scout like that. Nice Blade and koshirae.

    Cast tsuba?

I would have to agree with Grey, I think it is cast.

    for $175 on ebay

Hi Jock, I have to agree with you and most of the others here. I think it is a good buy. It may not be the be the best by a top smith, but the investment is not great and you may come up with a decent blade if you get it polished. Reinhold is always this way, rarely does he agree with most people here and he is always very critical. Don't let him discourage you off from continuing to learn and investigate. Not every old blade out there is, as he puts it, "crap".
  21. To say that the urushi process is complicated is an understatement. here is a link to the basic process (only 50 steps). :D http://www.urushi-kobo.com/process.html
  22. I certainly am no expert, but I see a BIG red flag if the seller won't show you the nakago. I would not spend any money on something I couldn't fully examine.
  23. Wow, what a great transformation. I hope you have a wonderfull time with it.
  24. Nope, a European one.
  25. One other thing that is very noticible is the differences between the english that is used on the main page (very poor) and that in the product descriptions. They have obviously been written by someone else. And Arthur is a very smart king.
