  1. Nice composition on this tsuba. I like how the flower stem enters from the bottom of the seppa-dai and the flower emerges from the top on both sides.
  2. A wonderful discovery for you and beautiful symbology. Your koshirae will look fantastic with these pieces. Congrats!
  3. XXXL seppa?
  4. Nice to see another Macross fan out there in the sword appreciation world. Although, I'm sure there are quite a few.
  5. Yves, I would think a simple search of the internet on the symbolic meaning of a fan and/or a butterfly in Japan would reveal a lot. To me it doesn't look like a crest. It looks like a depiction of everyday things that might have a symbolic significance when paired but perhaps not. But I could be wrong, of course. It is a nice image.
  6. There's at least one of these on yahoo basically every time I browse there.
  7. Jackie, if you're using a phone, go to the photo you want to post and take a screen shot of it. That will greatly reduce its size. You can then crop that new photo to get rid of your phone info like time and date and cell reception bars, etc.
  8. I like that one very much, Colin! Putting the “kink” in kinko?
  9. Hi Bob, They're tagged now and will see your post. Best, Jeremy

    Moon tsuba

  12. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
  13. Fair enough on the magnetism question feedback. Yeah, my real question is "Is it iron?" (as opposed to kinko) While a magnet not sticking to the tsuba is inconclusive, if a magnet DOES stick to it then we know something. It's an easy test is it not? Not like you need to ship it somewhere to hold a magnet to it...
  14. Is it iron? Does a magnet stick to it?
  15. Nice piece, Sam! I like how the nanako stops in the middle and splits the composition in half. The flowers look like sunflowers and forget-me-nots (probably not) or something that looks like forget-me-nots as I'm not sure those are native to Japan.
  16. So much better! (In my opinion) Thanks for sharing this.
  17. My understanding is that they will completely ignore papers submitted with an item.
  18. A little off topic: I wish I had gone to the castle and museum when I was in Kumamoto but I did go to Reigando, which was my main reason for traveling down to Kumamoto. It was a bit of a spiritual experience. I highly recommend it. Reigandō - Wikipedia
  19. Oh yeah, you're right. LOL. I misread the original post. His son has the sloppy storage of Nerf guns. Not Nerf guns AND swords...
  20. It's your son's stash if I remember correctly?

    Tsuba design

Might as well throw my opinion in here. Googling “plum blossom tsuba” will produce images of flowers with rounded edges. Googling “cherry blossom tsuba” will produce images of flowers with an indentation at the tip of each petal. My own katana which has a plum blossom theme has tosogu with rounded tip petals on the flowers. Plum tosogu also tends to highlight the fact that plum blossoms bloom right next to the branches which could explain the rectangle partly obscuring the flower. So my inexperienced opinion puts me in the plum camp.

    Tanuki Tsuba

Yes @Soshin, thank you very much for adding your photo. I agree with @Larason2that it's relevant to the discussion. Also, I like your tusba a lot. I'm a fan of furry creatures depicted on tosogu and this thread is similar to one I started a few months ago: The menuki turned out to be KITSUNE but I learned a ton in the process of discovery. Weasels (ITACHI) have quite a lot of history in Japanese folklore. Itachi – Yokai.com And the subcategory of the KAMAITACHI: Kamaitachi - Wikipedia As far as squirrels go, they are a pretty common tosogu theme, but they are typically depicted along with grapes somewhere in the composition. The overall figure and form of David's critter in addition to the lack of grapes, puts me in the ITACHI camp as well. Cheers, Jeremy
  24. This is a much different design and kinko but it made me think of this thread. https://www.jauce.com/auction/n1102107937
