Gaikotsu Katana? Help, info needed
Bridges replied to Bridges's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I’m going to hold off on purchasing this. The time frame the smith lived and what you all are telling me about the blade is not adding up. Thanks all! -
@Bruce Penningtonhere is a W on a stunning Japanese type 19 of mine. What you may be interested in are the 2 additional deep proof marks on the saya

Gaikotsu Katana? Help, info needed
Bridges replied to Bridges's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
@David Flynnthat would make more sense, I’m having issues with the signature on the tang… from what I’m gathering, Fujiwara Teruhiro quit making katana in 1644 but there were 13 generations of his school that used his signature long after his death. Another issue is, upon cross examination of the many generational signatures here, https://nihontoclub.com/view/smiths/list?id_op=%3D&id=&name_op=starts&name=teruhiro&kanji_op=%3D&kanji=&province=All&start_era=All&school_nid=All I don’t see the signature I posted on this list, maybe I am just a poor reader of Kanji(this is a fact). Not too mention the tang has virtually no oxidation. -

@John Ci saw that in my research! The solid Sterling would be a neat addition. -

@Briando you think the fittings were added post production? I know pictures only tell so much but if I buy this I may outfit it with more traditional fittings. I had someone translate the tang and they said the smith is, Fujiwara Teruhiro. I’m going to do some more research on this smith when I arrive home. -
Hey all, I rarely leave the militaria section but this Katana has caught my eye. ST Croix is selling this, a member of NHB so his reputation goes before him however, I’m not knowledgeable on Nihonto in regards to traditional katanas…can someone explain the skull and bones fittings? I’m hitting dead ends in online research. I’m not really seeing any historical uses of the skull and bones in Japanese Nihonto so I’m assuming this was added after the fact? I’m in the dark on this one.

Welp, I guess now I know where the type 19 from my topic, “Fleebay seller piddling multiple fakes, but is his type 19 fake?” went. See if the seller will let you accept returns. Bgood, I had an interaction with this seller who informed me he had sold them to someone (now known as you) on his website. What website is this? I’m interested in seeing if he has anymore fake type 19s. Sorry again about this, these sellers are abominable.

Sofe Designs Auction of Japanese Swords

Thanks for the resource, definitely checking it out -
It’s not @Bruce Pennington, I would not mind purchasing it but the seller is wanting $600 USD for an otherwise basic army type 19.
-
Hey @Dave R, are you proposing this may be a machine made blade in type 19 fittings?
-
Hey Jean, beautiful is subjective and I don’t dabble much in traditional blades outside militaria so for me, the hamon is nice and the condition of the blade is immaculate. Do you think it’s fake? The nakago doesn’t appear to have active rust which leads me to believe it was cleaned hence, destroying collectible value. Just my two cents!

This is a beautiful katana from a seller I’ve done business with. I cannot afford this but I’m sure many of you will appreciate this beauty! https://warpathmilitaria.com/product/wwii-temple-dedication-Japanese-gendai-sword/

That’s a find right there Bruce!
-
That’s what I was wondering Dan, it’s a first for me. I’ve never seen a mismatched type 19
-
Hey all, this may be uninteresting to some but I found it interesting. Here is a parade saber and the blade is way shorter than the scabbard length. The second picture shows the end nut has been peened so chances of the blade being replaced is slim but I thought it was an interesting pair.

Hey Gendai, as Bruce pointed out, Ohmura is a great resource. Dawson’s Swords of Imperial Japan is a must have book.

Any good locations to get a Shin Gunto in person?
Bridges replied to Gendai's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Hey Gendai, if you refer to the sword shows and events page you’ll see national shows and the for sale/trade section here is great. Trust me, I have tried pawn shop hopping/antique shopping in the upper half of my state and a little into the next state over. No luck. You’re looking for a literal needle in a haystack with this stuff. Your best bet is online, you’ll just have to educate yourself on fakes. -
1875/type 19 kyu gunto- real or fake?
Bridges replied to Pika007's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Thanks John! They sure do. I collect mainly type 19s, police types and kyu-guntos. Im not sure if you saw my other post on the fake type 19 with the habaki, but the engraving closely match these originals so much so it’s scary. -
Thanks John, seller must’ve reposted it

Thanks Francois! I haven’t seen that, I’ll take a look. That premium is definitely high 😅 -
Yahoo Japan auction shipping concerns
Bridges posted a topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Hey guys, I see a lot of individuals using the aforementioned site but whenever I want to ship something, the shipping service Buyee, restricts “weapons” from being sent outside of Japan. How do I get around this or is there another provider!?! This applies to about any sword I view and is VERY discouraging as the militaria im into is much cheaper over there.
