  1. Found this sword in Shirasaya described as Japanese Bunmei, now I’ve read a few books and been interested for many years but don’t recall the description Bunmei ! can anyone educate me what this is please? And of course is it any good? thanks, Lee.
  2. Many thanks, indeed someone kindly informed me that this sword has been discussed before and posted the link, makes for an unsettling read and glad I didn’t bite!
  3. Thanks everyone but seems a case of snooze you loose! As it’s sold, only spoke to the dealer yesterday evening? I wonder if the buyer came as a result of me bringing it up on the forum ? lesson learned, my fault for posting the link I guess?
  4. That’s a very friendly and helpful response to someone new to the forum! And how exactly would I know it’s been discussed previously? Was I supposed to sit here an£ spend 6 months reading threw every post? I only became aware of the sword 2 days ago so wanted some quick guidance from someone helpful! As it is it’s already sold. Id say thanks for your effort in replying but you didn’t offer anything helpful?
  5. Thank you for the information, interesting it’s been up for sale that many times? I wonder why ?
  6. Hi I’ve found the following at a military dealers and am just trying to evaluate if it’s a viably worthwhile purchase to study learn and enjoy. ( ultimately I’d really like an older civilian sword some way down the road. if anyone could give some insight it would be greatly received. so far I’m advised it’s Yasumitsu 1945. https://armouryantiques.com/armoury-antiques-militaria/ref-3596-ww2-Japanese-1944-pattern-sword-detail many thanks, Lee.
  7. Many thanks, would you consider it being worth £800? As long as it has no other flaws. Lee.
  8. Thank you Jean however can you explain your statement “1st Kanji is doubtful “? the blade ( at least what I can see of it appears to be in good polish and overall condition, would you concur? Rgds Lee.
  9. Thankyou to both of you, I found them in a antique dealers who wanted £25 for both but I didn’t know if they were Japanese or not.
  10. This has come up and although my knowledge is growing I’m not at a level I’d be confident to appraise myself. although it does look to be in good polish. https://armouryantiques.com/armoury-antiques-militaria/ref-3596-ww2-Japanese-1944-pattern-sword-detail thanks.
  11. Not swords but just out in an antique shop and found two screens but not sure if Japanese or Chinese?
  12. Hi all, I’ve just read through all of the mostly helpful replies many made in regards to my 1st post regarding being in the UK. sadly an individual did there best to create an unpleasant theme which resulted in the post being closed. I did however feel I needed to give my account and somewhat defence of my own personal experience of my first To-Ken society meeting last Saturday. although sadly a low turnout due to rail strikes and Covid, the few that were present were a wealth of information and knowledge that I can only aspire to. the secretary brought a couple of very fine examples and although I’m no authority going on others reactions they were very good examples. personally I felt it was one of the most beneficial ( personally) and rewarding meetings I’ve been to. obviously this is my own personal opinion and others are entitled to theirs, but mine was a very positive experience. Lee.
  13. Hi all, only just recently joined this group and have been busy reading many of the posts. I’ve observed there’s a few members from the Uk on here which is reassuring! can I ask where you find swords in the Uk? I’ve found many non Uk websites but am painfully aware of the difficulties of importing let alone finding a trusted source. many thanks.
  14. I don’t yet own a genuine sword hence my reasons for studying. I am currently reading facts and fundamentals which I recently picked up in a 5 book collection from a military dealer at a very reasonable price certainly less than I’ve seen this book alone selling for, the set also included the Connoisseurs book.
  15. Thank you Michael, yes I’ll certainly post once the time comes, I probably shouldn’t mention I did in fact buy a modern replica after much research and finding they are made to much better standards than they used to be, I figured it would fill a gap until such time I do find a genuine item.
  16. Many thanks Colin, it seems we are not only in the UK but similar area. I’m not far from Stanstead.
  17. I have the book this picture was used in and following pages showed an even more difficult to see picture of an American soldier attempting to shovel this mountain of swords into a furnace.
  18. Hi all, 1st post to say hello. I’ll be haunting in the background for a while while I catch up on all the posts I find interesting but will certainly contribute soon. I’ve been interested in Japanese swords for over 35 yrs and got as far as visiting some specialists fairs / seminars all those years ago but sadly didn’t commit to buying ( regrettably). all these years latter Covid gave me the opportunity to revisit my interest and after much research I’ve picked up a number of notable books even joined a very well known British organisation in order to learn more. My goal is to reach a level of being able to asses a sword myself in order to buy.
