  1. Yes!!! And IF anyone "believes" they have a Daisho, they should submit for Daisho papers. ALL the collectors who are always suggesting papers for authenticating mei should be in agreement. Good luck.
  2. The Samurai were abolished in around 1870.
  3. Muromachi period - 1550's is a good date I'd take the redundant word true out and just go with Daisho. I don't think all Samurai had Daisho.
  4. This look at this from a different angle of thought. Would a long and short Chinese reproduction sword sold at some shopping mall be considered a Daisho, because it's advertised that way? BTW, they are all over the Web. Does the meaning come from the top down, bottom -up, or a lot of grey from the middle? I've seen people write this is "over thought" when it's not thought of enough. Wikipedia The daishō (大小, daishō)—"big-little"[1]—is a Japanese term for a matched pair of traditionally made Japanese swords (nihonto) worn by the samurai class in feudal Japan.
  5. Lets not kid ourselves, collecting purity is about commerce. People who can afford the pure will defend pure and the people who can't will defend the other. Just because a person can afford purity doesn't make for the more knowledgeable collector. The same goes for people who can't afford purity making them any more knowledgeable. Collectors with more will make mistakes just like collectors with less. Life is life and people will always be people.
  6. I assuming the word "Daisho" came before 1948 Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword, or even 1911.
  7. " If i was to meet some old dude in Japan that had a daisho and he was saying they were his great great grandfathers daisho but went on to say they are by diffrent smiths at different times, im hardly likely to go "WHOA, what you talking about?" I would say, that's true. Yep, I personally throw the white flag up. More good questions then answers.
  8. Is a Tachi and and Tanto considered a Daisho? That combo was worn by Samurai. Most certainly won't be of the same Koshirae, but can be from the same smith, Wait until you see the 46 references pertaining to the definition of a Tachi. I "think" the definitions lead us to one thing and one thing only. How deep are our pockets.
  9. Whatever the NBTHK papers them as, since they are the gold standard. Everyone is hung-up on papers which equates to precise authenticity and value.
  10. No disrespect, but what does close mean? Does the papers say daito, or matched set?
  11. Can you imagine that, a club within a club. Sounds normal for just about everything.
  12. Functionality over aesthetics, battle pick-up, Artistic rendering? Some show daisho, some don't. Seems to be psychological preference
  13. When collecting, I've always been a purist. It's the bane of my existence. How insane is it to display pieces in wood cases which are worth the price of luxury cars? My answer has always been, I don't have to build large garages.
  14. Just a thought, not a conclusion. I would assume a Samurai would have Swords Long - Short / Koshirae from the same smith. Again, I was involved at the time with the top Dealers / Collectors in surmising this conclusion. Can we be wrong, hell yes.
  15. WE disused this when Darcey was just a Newbie, where do you think he got it from! Yes, a Daisho is in a sense a long and short sword. However, we as collectors describe a "True Daisho" and it's meaning. The information "at the time" was sampled from "papers". I understand "Papers" have become much more relaxed over the last few decades.
  16. Guess what, I feel the same Not worth the roll in the mud.
  17. Daisho? If the swords mei matches, or, and the Koshirae mei matches, papered, you "may" have a Daisho, In the true sense, a Daisho is pretty rare and looked at very favorably. The word Daisho in "Dealer Speek" is thrown around most frequently.
  18. I'm in the same boat of collecting and opinion. The only other collecting market which rivals is jewels.
  19. Oh, I know of a lot of those Vamps and they've been around for quite sometime. Some of them have died by the stake and others just keep on stalking. I'm not sure if the Web created more, or helps more. I call it a 50 / 50.
  20. "Also...I would appreciate a private message from people who have come here for info on their swords who are maybe newcommers here, and have immediately received lowball offers on the items from dealers." Dealers??? Anyone who has sold 1 sword is considered a "Dealer". This hobby, as most obscure hobbies is filled with a snake pit of vipers who call themselves collectors and not dealers. Newcomers have always been looked at as prey for the blood dripping Vampire's.
  21. The better the Artisan the worst business person they are. Like Polishing, $375 including labor is a hobby, not a business. My plumber cost $500 with a 4hr window to walk in the door.
  22. Tsukamaki Article from JSS/US http://www.montanairon.com/tsukamaki.html
  23. When was the Tsukamaki silk wrap 1st introduced? My old brain can't recall and I haven't had any luck searching.
  24. Not a bad price on the Arrows, had to put my glasses on. Assume those were repros, very nice.
