  1. We "used to" define Hadori polish as a lot of makeup on a very old lady.
  2. My guess, Area looks like someone already cleaned that spot up a little and determined it has issues. Without being a photo keyboard jockey, have a polisher take look. That's if you want to spend money and time. That's up to you.
  3. Depends on WHY you're buying? If it's because of study no. If it's because you want a Japanese sword ... then it's up to your budget.
  4. It seems the treasure hunt is what clouds peoples judgment and prevents asking before leaping. Nihonto is a VERY academic study / hobby and doesn't favor the unexperienced.
  5. I'd put money the Tuba was replaced with that cast one. It often happens (a lot) for monetary purposes.
  6. Ya, I never prescribed to that "theory", mass produced for the war effort the quality wasn’t very good due to many unskilled smiths had to keep up with the war effort. It's not logical so many swords made it through the ages in this good of condition. It was also said, if Samurai returned after battle with inferior swords smiths would be executed.
  7. So true! If you're buying a big name blade, it "pays" to have an oversea broker.
  8. It even comes in the original box which makes it more valuable,
  9. Greed is not nonsense at all which is why people are taken by grifters. Too good to be true is a golden rule. People in the Nihonto world are plagued by "is this real" all the time. Most of the time they buy 1st and act they're just asking for a friend, or curious. Many argue that it's real when everyone tells them it's not. This goes on daily, so people who know brush it off as you say nonsense.
  10. More worried about looters stampeding the place of business I'm shopping. Everyone is carrying the worlds information in there back pocket, use it. Some basic intelligence is needed when making buying decisions.
  11. Yes, this example BUT....I've seen very good blades in bone carved koshirae. I've seen some nice bone carved Tsuba. It's like everything else, know what's goods and the bad stands out.
  12. The Japanese Sword Index http://www.japaneseswordindex.com/nihonto.htm is way more comprehensive then The Samurai Sword by John M Yumoto... And it's FREE!
  13. The That's a good way of looking at it. I've seen ALOT of of mumei suriage swords "pitted" with Hozon papers / 150 years span. Once a collector gets to a certain level of understanding they either figure it out, or they don't. "I" believe the nihonto community outside of Japan has enough scholars who have figured it out. Too many young collectors get hung-up on opinions from commerce, way to many.
  14. I'm sorry I wrote as much as I did. The game isn't about steel, or complicated answers my friend. It's about American Benjamins and how to receive more for less.
  15. Start with the price of restoration which has been the same for the last few decades. The Japanese market excludes military blades. The market is what ever one can get, thus no set market. Going back into time until now most have a buying threshold of $5K - $7K. Over $7K, buying becomes more serious. I said most, not all.
  16. I'll say it once again, overseas Shinsa has changed dramatically in the last few decades and not for the better. IMOP it has cheapen the purest of the hobby.
  17. Unless you come across a back of the closet find many eyes have seen a sword. Even advanced collectors are fooled from time to time. Once upon a time someone finds something good and the whole cycle starts over again. I would say, it pays to learn, BUT we all have paid our dues $$$$$$
  18. It's not just the false mentality of the Japanese, It's all systems and all people. Should of been around a few decades ago on American Epray. Without rules we are all animals.
  19. Looks like America Epray a few decades ago before the rules changed. BBW
  20. b Bonhams is more of a retail + auction IMO, but like everything their can be exceptions. They're looking for a certain type of buyer.
  21. It's one of those stab things meant to pick up litter, see the tear running down his face.
  22. Over the decades I've known friends who worked USPS, UPS and FredX, even my brother when he was young. The stories would freak the hell out of anyone. The only remedy was over insure if what your shipping is valuable. The End
  23. That's really a long blade to be Muromachi, especially if it was shorten. This is all best guess with many exceptions poor referenced information
  24. When you say Blade length is 27.5” long. Is that cutting, or total length? Looks really long in the not so good photos.
  25. Don't need insurance until you need insurance,
