  1. I just love these descriptions from these sellers. Apparently they're living in a fantasy world. The blade in mounts are in rough shape. The tsuka ito has been re-wrapped and incorrectly at that. Minus all the finish loss. To restore this would cost you as much as one in great shape already.
  2. Thanks for the pictures Michael!
  3. Looks like it has some "civilian" gunto fittings. I too would like to see more of the koshirae.
  4. Thanks for the correction. Solid guard, not openwork.
  5. Came across this "Type 8" with some serious issues. I was interested by the hilt. Sharkskin handle and the design is carved instead of cast. I have seen some with carving but not the whole thing. Has anyone seen one like this before?
  6. Looks good to me!
  7. Only thing I've ever gathered on here is that tsuba collecting is like modern art.. Some people will call this art and pay $6 million for it and others will scoff at it. Some will call this art and others will scoff at it. Buy what you like.
  8. Dragon? 9.4 x 8.9cm.
  9. IMO, the "diamonds" are very small, and I personally do not like this style of tsukamaki. I believe this is the main reason it is hiding most of the menuki.

    Wild things

The only animal tsuba I have.
  11. I saw this for sale as well. Imo, its pieced together. I have been seeing a few showato coming out of Japan in civilian mounts within the past few years. The horimono is either very low quality or has been polished down. . If this had its original mounts even with the issues I probably would've bid on it too.
  12. Whoops, glanced over it when I scrolled through the pages. Thanks!
  13. Just an FYI, in order to use the postal scanners an employee has to scan in their I.D. when you scan a package, it also records the GPS location where it was scanned and they're pretty darn accurate unless you live out in the sticks. Basically what I'm saying is the postmaster should be able to see where it "disappeared" and who scanned it. If it disappeared at one of the hubs though its a whole other can of worms.
  14. They're all like that Bruce. At least the ones I own. The "tassel" part is a long string of fringes that is wrapped around the cord forming the "ball"
  15. I agree with Grey. The pictures make it appear larger and stranger than what it is. But if you "draw-in" the missing kissaki everything looks correct. Still interesting and I kinda like it.
  16. I don't like it. He's known for messing with blades and acid etching them. Can clearly be seen here. I have personally been outbid on gunto from private sellers and seen them relisted by him all touched up i.e rust removed, acid enhanced hamon etc.. I don't know why he feels the need to do it on everything. BTW, if a seller allows returns on eBay you CANNOT leave negative feedback. If they sell high volume/value items they can easily get them removed within minutes too.
  17. Kamon Menuki also.
  18. I have 2 pairs of menuki that appear to be rodents. I would think the long slender ones are rats and the "chunkier" ones are mice. Opinions?
  19. Its not a genuine Japanese sword. Tsuba is cast, fittings are junk, nakago is ground down, shinogi is off, nakago-ana is drilled way to far down, and it has a brass habaki which is a pretty standard on fakes. Only gunto usually tend to have them.
  20. Leather was used on yari saya and naginata saya. I have seen quite a few yari saya with leather "covers" As far as the chidome goes I have not had any luck finding out how its done. And I have looked. From what I can see on mine, I believe it it one piece of cord that starts off thin gradually gets thicker and tapers out thin again.
  21. As was said, walrus ivory that has been filed in a scalloped shape. Here's 2 tusk pieces of Narwhal
  22. Looks copper to me with some verdigris forming?
  23. I agree with John. I don't have any type 3 gunto, but I'm not liking what I see. The tsuka has been incorrectly re-wrapped, the fuchi ana has been filed, the tsuka has been spliced with a piece of wood where the chuso goes and it looks like there's a significant gap between the fuchi and tsuka, and the tsuka looks to have a shim for the nakago mune. I'd be questioning the tsuka, I would want to see it bare without fuchi.
