  1. приветствую Николай, цыфры 88 это номер сборки оправы. номер длжен повторятся на всех деталях оправы. Клеймо якоря показывает, что твой кайгунто был изготовлен на морском арсенале Тоёкава. мечи изготавливались из нержавейки
  2. i saw this sword on e-bay and considered in participating in bidding, however decided not to. Pity. If i knew that buyer will decide to change mounts, i guess i'd try to obtain it. It saddens to know that the sword will loose its recent history.. just wanted to add - nihonto only relatively recently(from the point of view of all its history) started to be considered as art. Before that it was weapon, be it feudal or modern army, period shinto or gendaito. Therefore, Simon, if you are so anti-anti militaristic, you should stop looking into history of nihonto at all.
  3. T19 dress sword for army(not cavalry) leutenant - captain
  4. $30k for cat in the bag... nice
  5. just to add about current import regulations in Lithuania. Private person can import up to 2 edged weapons without any permission from police. Non-taxable value if shipper again is private person is 30 USD, if company - 20 USD. Appr. dues on edged weapons is 1.7% plus 21% VAT, plus small post fee. Upon arrival of package i get phone call from post office, i send them general information item and value, and they calculate what i have to pay. Customs point is located in post office and i don't need to approach customs myself. Depending on type of postal service i pay my dues upon delivery of item or when picking up from the nearest post office.
  6. hello everyone, i was reading this topic with huge interest. I'm buyer, not seller, and it is interesting to know what issues or problems "the other side" can have while selling. Makes it easier to understand terms and conditions of sellers, which are sometimes, from my point of view, not 100% logical. As i wrote i'm buyer and yes, i'm one of "these", who asks for possibility to indicate lower value. Honestly, besides to save money(that is good too), i think that regulations of our customs to put dues and taxes on items, which i obtain for personal use, is stupid, especially then non-taxable value is ~ 25-30 USD. However, i respect seller decision and keep my side of bargain - then bidding i always consider that i'll have to pay 100% of taxes. I believe, i obtained different items from several members of this forum, some of them agreed with my request, some not and i don't think that they felt any kind of frustration from my side. I understand that there are n-number of not honest buyers and i believe that is why seller has rights to list his terms and conditions of auction & shipping. What frustrates me, though, is then seller starts to invent new terms or conditions after the auction. I had one case viceversa to Kevin's. I won on auction, was ready to transfer payment, when suddenly seller wrote me, that it is forbidden to import edged weapons to Lithuania and he refuses to ship the item. It didn't help neither my offer to check my feed-backs, where 90% of items obtained are edged weapons, nor my proposal to write confirmation that seller is not responsible for actions of my customs. I think it wouldn't help even if i would provide customs code of Lithuania in English.. The only reason i could think out, that seller was not satisfied with sales price and thus was trying to cancel the deal. It was showato and, although price was good, i didn't start the issue on e-bay and allowed to cancel the deal. As you see, the stick has two ends. i think exact and clear listing of seller terms and conditions will help in 90% of deals. the other 10%... well there are dishonest buyers, there are dishonest sellers and there is always risk selling or buying in web. best regards
  7. 1000 AUD is non-tax value in Australia? Wow.. i really envy that. We in Lithuania have generous limit of.. ~ 30 USD. And i hate to pay 21% or more on items, which i obtain for my personal use or collection outside EU.
  8. you haven't put picture of no. near habaki, but seems like everything OK with what i saw...
  9. Well, e-bay made stupid restrictions about edged weapons in UK. They could do the same for Chinese. Now they flood all e-bay with fakes. If to choose "modern Japanese swords" you will find 90% of sells from China. However, i'm afraid it would be only temporary - even now some smart guy sells fakes and location indicated is Belarus(!! guess he doesn't know anything about this country, especially regulations regarding sales of edged weapons)
  10. nice view:) T19 kyu-gunto is dress? the one on the left - is it pilots or not gunto at all?
  11. thank you, Alan. i understand and use term "stainless steel" as basic. From what i remember from the days of studies(machinery engineering) there are plenty of different types of "mixed" steel. i just don't know the correct terms in English i guess Japanese smiths used mainly chromium as alloying element as the easiest technology of produce..
  12. yeah, a lot. mainly general information in various sources.. some geography or even "wild games"...
  13. thank you very much. so, this sword can be considered valuable from the military point of view only, not nihon-to. i tried to gather information about Tenshozan, but there is very little besides general information. If i understood correctly Tenshozan forge, together with Toyokawa arsenal were main suppliers of swords and dirks for Navy. Perhaps, there is more detailed information about it available on internet? thank you very much in advance for you help!
  14. one more question about this sword - considering it is made of stainless steel it should be considered as showato? Considering that it was small forge, could it produce machine made swords? could it be possible that swords were produced with traditional methods just using stainless steel?
  15. Mr. Moriyama, Tom, John, thank you very much for your help!!!!
  16. Hello everyone, i'd like to ask you for your help with translation and information on the smith. I'm putting here in order not to risk o anger the nihonto lovers - mei is from sword in kai gunto mounts and dated 1939 Unfortunaly there are no good quality closeups on blade. Seller writes translation as "Tenshozan Fujiwara Akimitsu motte (?)shugo sakukore". is it true? i guess the sword no way can be related to Akimitsu(Igurashi) and would be grateful if somebody could list some information on smith Am i right to assume, that the sword is showato, made from stainless steel? thank you very much in advance
  17. Hello everyone, i'm from "the other side" - Buyer from small country in Europe i never sold on e-bay and i don't know what measures Seller can take in order to ban bidder he does not like or what information about bidder is available to him. But i'm sure about few things: - you can find jerks everywhere - within or outside US, of course, if you limit your sales area, you limit quantity of jerks:), but.. as it was written before, you limit number of your potential buyers as well. - i constantly logged in e-bay and i noted that items, sold only within US, gets lower prices than relatively the same items, sold worldwide. - regarding customs.. well, i guess its worth spending some time to get used to customs regulations and i see no way how the seller can be responsible if the items gets confiscated in the buyers country if shipping method was agreed in advance and, especially if seller states in description that he is no way responsible for any procedures in Buyers country - customs, license and etc. all types of business have kind of risk level, so you just to have to understand it if you are running it:)
  18. nobody knows, but of course shin gunto are more left than kai gunto. Roughly, if to consider the listings on e-bay as market indication, i'd say 1 to 3
  19. maybe it shouldn't be started? a lot of people here suggested that...
  20. Hi Claes, you should check J.Dowson's book
  21. really strange. I believe i bought something from him before, bayonet, i think, and it was ok with communication and shipping. I noted that he constantly offers mid to lower grade Japanese military edged weapons and i couldn't think he can be so ..reactive. considering pictures i would have doubts that's even showato... and definetly wouldn't even try to consider obtaining THAT item.
  22. to add to Dick's post - all these grades were also divided into army officers(gold) / army officials(silver) / police officers. If i'm correct, German style black tassels(ball types - never seen other type) were started to use after 1912 or 1914? Truly i couldn't find enough information about kyu gunto tassels. Some are noted in Fuller&Gergory books, some by J.Dowson, but not enough definetely.
  23. considering quality.. i'm sorry, but i think its a fake... of course, i'm not an expert
  24. i still don't own original of this type 2 NCO's, so i'm allways looking. here are two examples to compare one of Tokyo and one of Nagoya arsenals: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT
  25. all 3 fakes. for sure. the only one stamp is possible to see does not meet original standard. pictures are blur and conveniently don't show distinctive details ... description is also classic: "i consider original but i'm not an expert". can believe he sold them... And they are sold by MODERATOR OF THE FORUM!! wow..
