Are these swords real ore fake?
sencho replied to muse matso's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I think Bruno is right, Albert... no. 5 looks like a fake.... that swirly hada on the blades gives that away immediately... Number 9 could be real wartime Nihonto or a factory produced Japanese WW2 sword... in either case, and again as Bruno points out, it is not in good condition.... Cheers. -

Albert, No. 5 looks suspicious... maybe a fake... show us the tang and that will probably say for sure, but that "oil on water" hada look is not promising! Cheers. -
.... isha mo saji o nageru

Simon, You will probably find more experts lurking here than anywhere else you can go! Any particular region of Japan?? Cheers

Maybe you need to study just a tiny bit more... You could start with basic terminology of Nihonto.... Cheers

Were chinese crappers on sale 40 - 50 years ago??? I was in short trousers back then, so maybe I am wrong, but I would thing that they weren't so much... some of the more seasoned members maybe able to advise differently... Anyway, by my reasoning, you are being fed a story about the 60's and 70's... cheers! -
Man there has been a run on chinese garbage over the last 48 hours... another couple of chinese crappers just went up on the Nihonto section... I need a glass of Imo... or four....

Albert, They are fake chinese rubbish... where are you being offered these... on the internet?? Cheers -
Michael, Didn't see the tip picture, but don't waste your time posting it.... as Grey was 100% sure of, this is a very nasty looking pile of steaming Chinese excrement; and (as Bruno said) is no good for anything but the trash can! I was 99% sure on the first pic, but wanted to make sure some arse had not farted around with a dremmel on something... especially that you had said it was bought by a friend in Japan... is this montrosity actually in Japan?? Cheers

New to Japanese swords on Ebay Auctions

Oh wow... and what a fake this is.... I just though I'd seen the nastiest one 2 minutes ago in this thread.... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10951 but this is worse! But hey, it is not the end of the world... same words apply to you, Tim. If your chosen hobby is Japanese swords, then you need to hit the books, learn lots from the NMB and also scour the (above) linked Nihonto sales sites, to attune your brain to immediately detect genuine from fake.... Don't waste your time with ebay... probably only one in every thousand "Japanese" swords on there is genuine. Within a few months, you will look back at this post a wonder how you could have even thought for one minute that this was anything but a nasty nasty fake... I remember that day quite well... -

Looks like someone who had no clue of Japanese writing (or Chinese for that matter) tried to re-create Japanese characters with a dremel... Show us the blade, a close up of the tip, maybe the whole of the tang, and we will be able to tell you, I am sure. Cheers.

Simon, I think this is an entirely over romanticized view. There are generally far more simple and practical reasons for these things, than we Westeners often like to believe! I would echo Georges post... Cheers!

No idea who your "sensei" is, but I suggest you appreciate Morita san and Muriyama san's comments to which you obviously have paid no attention to at all...
-
I think that is an excellent idea.... Cheers

sorry Curran... Reinhard can describe the "water of life" as Whiskey or Whisky .... both perfectly acceptable.... ......just depends what type of skirt you originally wore! Cheers

My company is supporting Peace Winds Japan, an NGO which helps people stricken by war, famine and disaster all over the world... now they are in action right at home. Japanese - http://peace-winds.org English - http://peace-winds.org/en/ Please help if you can. Cheers

Yes absolutely acceptable! Clive, was that an intentional inaccuracy there? Removing Henry's (fictional) motivational speech to Agincourt instead of Harfleur?? You old tester, you!! I guess I regard Shakespeares' tetrologies, and their numerous inaccuracies both intentional, or otherwise, as historical themselves; much like Chushinagura. "Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide, Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit To his full height. On, on, you noblest English." ..... Terrific! Felt like that at Twickenham yesterday!! (sorry Jean!)
-
Clive, I take it you use this argument for the Last Samurai then? This Chushinagura argument does not wash with me. It is like saying that the recent TV butchery of the Tudor dynasty is fine, because Henry V does not have historical accuracy.... I note Carlo's point here too. I would suggest that this movie will be great for business, entertaining for some and cringeworthy for others, just like the Last Samurai was. However it will at most certainly have the same effect as the Last Samarai; people will believe it is historically acurate.. After all King Henry VIII's sister murdered the King of Portugal and the American Navy turned the tide of WWII, by capturing an Enigma machine and related cyphers.... ....Don't tell me...? Bill and Ted land their phone booth in 18th Century Japan smack bang in the middle of the Ako Incident. General mayhem, hilarity, a run away and out of control palanquin and a school project ensues, and it all ends up with an A for historical irrelevance on the report card..... can't wait! :D PS... I don't mean to mean to denegrate Mr. Reeves personally, I am sure he is a very plesant gentleman.... just that he is not, in my opinion the most talented actor to ever grace the stage or screen... still I am sure he has more money than I will ever have, and maybe that is what counts most...
-
I think he may regret putting his name to that! I guess he is not advising on the "stylized fantasy" parts of the movie. Reeves is like a plank of wood when he speaks English... Imagine him attempting a dude filled Japanese dialog... Or was he that "historical" American in Japan, so famously recorded during the period? We shall see... Cheers!

They are now making a movie of the 47 Ronin, starring... wait for it.... Keanu Reeves!!! Can't wait for that load of old bollocks to arrive!! Cheers
