  1. I stumbled upon a sword for sale near me that I am unable to match to any of the diplomat swords in Fuller & Gregory Military Swords of Japan. It seems to fall into the category of Diplomat sword, but the decorations are different than any of the pics in the book. (Dragonfly). The one side of the hand guard looks to have half of the police rising sun emblem. Just wondering if anyone has any additional info on this. Nihonto is my main collection, but I can get this fairly cheap to broaden my collection.

    Much Appreciated in Advance!

  2. 11 hours ago, Japan auctions said:

You do NOT have to wait 2 months!

I can buy on Yahoo auctions for you and send to Australia, USA and other blocked countries by DHL.

    Takes just a few days.

Only blades have to go by EMS (now blocked to Australia and USA) or seamail.

My blade exporter is also working on a UPS contract to send blades... hopefully ok'd soon...

Are you saying to have my items sent to you, then you send to me with your DHL contract?

  3. I have won a couple auctions from ebay in the last month or two, and have NOT had any problems with shipping. I won a kozuka last night and the seller tells me that Japan post will not do air shipping, and he can only Japan post the item via seamail and it could take 3-4 months for delivery! He says that DHL and FedEx are too expensive and he does not have an account with them to get cheap shipping.

I'm about to cancel this deal with him since he never mentioned the shipping problem in his listing, only after I won the auction. Any suggestions? He has a few other items I am wanting to get, but don't want to wait for 3-4 months. There has got to be a better way.

    Much Appreciated!

  4. I work at a machine shop and have access to many machines. I planned to make the existing hole a solid size...say 2mm for example, then make a plug that is 2.1mm outside diameter, with a hole in the center of about .5mm (maybe less). I can freeze the plug in liquid nitrogen and insert easily into the 2mm hole, then as the plug heats up, it will have a solid interference fit, and no fear of ejecting out.

    Your thoughts on this?

  5. Piers,

The internal bore is in good shape, with some minor pitting. The pan, however, has some deep pitting. What should the diameter of the through hole be? I would like to get this into working condition. With the through hole being so large, there would be a great loss of pressure once the main charge ignites.

  6. I just received a new to me Wakizashi, that came with older NBTHK papers for the koshirae. I am familiar with and mostly understand papers for the blade, but I know nothing about papers for the koshirae.  The only part I do understand on this paperwork is the date of Showa Go Ju Ichi nen ju ichi gatsu roku hi. This date also matches the day the sword received its Kicho Ninteisho papers. I have no idea what is on this paper. I would greatly appreciate help with the translation!

    Much Appreciated!

  7. There are some very interesting items in there, BUT!!!, keep in mind the 25% buyers premium added on to your final bid price. Then you must arrange shipping on top of that...on an item with just a few generic pics.

  8. I am familiar with nagamaki and naginata but a nagakatana? Since the seller specifically says in the description that the blades are wakizashi, would it be a nagazashi? <-- I'm being sarcastic here.

    Please explain!

Seller claims orikaeshi-mei. Wouldn't this actually be a gaku-mei since it was channeled and not actually folded?

  9. Hello to all. Long time collector of nihonto but new to teppo. I found this at an antique shop while on vacation in Tennessee. Thanks to some Facebook friends, I know the signature is Goshu Kunitomo Tayosuke Katsumasa. It also contains Niju makibari. Would really enjoy learning more about Tayosuke Katsumasa such as time period he worked, how he is viewed as a smith compared to other Smith's of the time. Any information is greatly appreciated! https://i.imgur.com/caJc0US.jpg
