Purchased a type 19 gunto online that had the following markings on the blade and wooden surrender tag. I would like to know who they represent. I always appreciate how helpful this forum is.

Questions about a Navy Dress? Sword
MacTheWhopper replied to MacTheWhopper's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Found it. Thank you so much for your help. Korean Occupational Sword it is -
I have some questions regarding a sword I ran into online. The pictures are below and my concerns with the sword are: 1. The Logo on the guard is unknown to me and I couldn't find another one like it after researching it 2. The tip of the blade seems to be different from the other navy swords, it seems to be too small for a combat blade but the tip and style is different from similar style swords. 3. The style of the guard is also different from other ones in Dawson's book. Does anyone know anything about this style of sword? Any help is greatly appreciated. I couldn't find one like it from Dawson's book which makes me believe it is fishy.

Oh, nice. Thank you. I think He just wanted to remove the tsuka from it as he thought it would be easier to work with. He always did this kind of work by hand. He is 70 now and retired and figures this project is atleast a 60 hour one but ha cannot do alot of things he used to do, due to health reasons but he feels like he is able to do so something like this and it will give him something to work on for a month or two. Its probably pretty tough to find swords in this bad of condition but im maybe thinking of putting up an ad on here and see if there are any other WWII like this one that can be had for a lower price. I paid 325.00 for this one. I am not really sure if thats a good price or not but it will be something for him to keep him occupied.

I purchased this sword online, my father did a little bit of knife making and polishing back in his earlier days (all by hand) and said he would like to find a wwii sword that is really beat up and attempt to clean it up. It took me a while to find him one to work on. I ended up with a type 95 that was very heavily pitted.I tried to removed the screw on the sword but due to it being stripped, I wasnt having any luck on it. Anyone else ran into this problem and have any ideas? I am well aware that you don't normally want to mess with these swords, he really wanted to try cleaning a beat up one up so i found him a beat up one. I don't think blades get in much worse condition than this, unless its broken.

Struggling to identify this sword
MacTheWhopper replied to Eric Wesson's topic in Military Swords of Japan
I am no expert in these things and a new collector so my opinion can be taken with a grain of salt but the mounts to me look like a civilian gunto. These were made in WWII. I cannot read the tang but other will really be able to help. Nice sword, btw and welcome! -
This sword seems like it might be a frakenshort sword but can you guys explain it to me. It has characters on the habaki and the habaki is not straight by any stretch of the imagination. I purchased two different police swords together and one seems pretty normal (not in good condition, though). Condition is not great but i didnt have any short swords.

The plot thickens. So this may have came this way though the tsuka may have been at the very least, re-wrapped. The info on the army swords maybe makes the sword atleast mostly add up, atleast potentially.

This gunto seems to be an interesting what am i piece. It might have identity issues for sure. It has the naval anchor markings (Toyokowa) but has army fittings and saya. The tsuba is open work, The fittings are all nice and tight on it. What kind of sword is this? I talked to Bruce P on here and he thought it might be one of the four options: 1. This is original, but who knows why? 2. This was a post-war put-together (a Bubba may have had a naked blade and found a set of koshirae to fit, not knowing enough about navy/army looks.) 3. This was a G.I. piece-together. There was plenty of that going on as guys returning home, had a blade with missing saya, or completely damaged fittings, and reached into a pile of gunto to find something to fit. An very thin idea: The Toyokawa arsenal was allowed to remain open after the war, making gunto for souvenirs, sold by the Army PX. They didn't have army fittings, though, they were navy in look, but with gilded army metal pieces. By the looks of the new ito and the pure white same', this rig almost looks like something built as a souvenir, but from real parts. What doesn't fit the idea is the actual worn-looking combat saya.

Yamakami Akihisa Late War (Type 3) Gunto
MacTheWhopper replied to MacTheWhopper's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Thank you, everyone for all of the info on this sword. It sounds like its a keeper for sure. I will have to decide if getting it papered is worth the money. Your guys' help has been greatly appreciated. -
Was wondering what the signature on this tang reads. As always, I appreciate the help. Also does anyone recognize the stamp on this blade?
-
Recently purchased this sword and really like the way it looks and feels. It was made Yamakami Akihisa is what the seller had said. When i looked that name up, i got Yamakami Akihisa and Yamagami Akihisa. It looks like he made alot of these type 44 late war swords and seemed to be a pretty good swordsmith. Anyone have anything else to add in from these pictures of the sword or opinions on it.
-
I have the opportunity to purchase this sword. The seller says the maker is Kojima Yoshimichi who was a Seki swordsmith during Showa era. I googled the name but couldn't find much about him and the pieces I did find had a different signature. The swords looks be in really good condition and from Dawson's book, it seems to be correct. Is the name of this sword maker correct? The seller said thew would take 700.00 for this sword, shipped which seems fair. I don't think its a fake but i'm no expert by any stretch, is the price reasonable on it?

A Pretty Crude Late War Gunto.
MacTheWhopper replied to MacTheWhopper's topic in Military Swords of Japan
I was a little worried that it might be a fake due to it being so crudely made. If fake though, I am covered but definitely want to take better precautions on swords. -
Hello everyone. I wanted to show some pictures of a rough shape crude and what I believe to be a later war gunto. I'd like to see what the board thinks about. I have dawson's book but the late war guntos seem to all have the wooden handles. The blade looks to be very crudely made. What do you guys think about it and are swords like these referenced in dawson's book and i just didn't see it? Any information is always appreciated.

I actually picked one up earlier this morning. Its kind of a bummer too because it was actually more expensive than Mr. Doffins. -

I am currently looking for a copy of Dawson's book. Been waiting for a used copy to come up but they don't seem to, very often. -
Questions about a (Gunto?)
MacTheWhopper replied to MacTheWhopper's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Well I am glad that I hadn't purchased it, yet. I did look on on the tsuba, tsuka and saya and it seemed to look off to my eyes. Thank you so much for letting me know this. I am hoping that the other blade will turn out to be real as I really like the look of it.
