  1. Talk about inaccuracies, the 2nd Ranger battalion, didn't go over the beach, they were commando's. They went up the cliff at Pointe du Hoc. Ssssh and I'm an Aussie.
  2. Amahide swords seem to be popular on ebay. Even his showato sell for over $1500 in good nick.
  3. John Sloughs book. He has various works of Amahide and the various ways they were signed.
  4. Looks like it was signed by his son, Kanemune.
  5. depends on whether it was mass produced at his factory, or special order. does it have an arsenal stamp (see section on military swords this forum)?
  6. I met James at the San Fransisco show in 06. He was on the table with Bob Benson. He also attended the 09 Shinsa and show in Sydney, where he had a table. I have been under the impression, that he, was trained by Bob Benson.
  7. I have seen a Shin Shinto tanto mounted in one of these mounts. I can't remember if it was signed or not, however, this tanto was of lesser quality.
  8. Jason, why not send it to James Jordan in NZ? I'm sure he would give you the right answer. Sorry I don't know his address, but I doubt he would be too hard to find.
  9. What is being politely said is, this looks like a Chinese knockoff.
  10. The cloth is just a surrender tag. Every officer who surrendered a sword attached one. The usually just have the chaps name, unit, rank so forth. Some have where he was from.
  11. He was a wartime smith and this sword is in a ww11 officers mount. probably original to the sword.
  12. Instead of worrying who originally owned this sword, doesn't the whole thing revolve around how it was described and sold?
  13. Mark, by the pics, it looks like a showato to me.
  14. there is more than one Nobumitsu.
  15. May I suggest the Conoisseurs book of Japanese swords.
  16. Why do NCO swords have the serial nos. in Arabic Numerals?
  17. Just a reminder Jason , don't rush into anything. If at the Militaria fair, you don't find anything that reallly grabs you, keep in mind the fact that you can come to the Sydney show in Sept. Last shinsa/show we had was in March 2009, and a few people came over from NZ.
  18. G'day Brock, you are now part of an international community, so welcome from Oz.
  19. Obtaining advice from low quality pics on low quality swords is frustrating at best. There will be a shinsa and show in Sydney, early Sept. Buy what you like and bring them to the shinsa. Or study more save some money and see what's available at the show.
  20. Another interesting point, the Japanese army was originally trained by the French. Then when they had a falling out with the Japanese Govt. Their role was taken over by the Germans. Except for trade, America did bugger all.
  21. This sword sold on ebay, did it not?
  22. There is a chap, James Jordan I think, Bob Benson trained in NZ. Sorry don't know any other info.
  23. I wholeheartedlly agree with John. I myself, along with Chris Bowen and George Trotter, are Gendai Collectors. Unfortuneately, there are some who think that, because they collect pre 20thcentury swords they have dibs on what is classed as Nihonto. This certainly is not the case, eg. The Florida show is having a major talk on Gendai, and we intend to do the Same at the Sydney Show in Sept. As far a s tassels go, these are part of a Koshirae and why shouldn't the be classed that way?
