G'day all, I couldn't help but post my new tsuba which i really like. I'd be happy for any comment both for and against as i really have no details about it apart form the motif showing flowers in what i assume is brass and silver. Cheers Chris

Guys, you are gems, many thanks Chris

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify the school that this Tsuba may be from, I'm lead to believe that it shows KIKU (chrysanthemum) and may be from the Edo period. Quite broad i know Cheers and best Chris

Thanks very much to all for your input. The solid tsuba came mounted to a signed Gunto, and actually looks the part when assembled. The cut out, I agree is very poor quality, slightly larger and was donated to me, not attached to any sword, so I suspect as you do that it is a copy and not a very good one @ that. once again many thanks. G'day all, I have two Gunto Tsuba, pics below. The one on the right is solid and fairly well finished off, while the one on the left is a poorer quality, sukashi tsuba that is a tad bigger than the solid one. Any ideas why one is solid while the other is cut out, my thinking is that perhaps the Sukashi Tsuba was produced later in the war and was cut out to either save weight or to save metal which could be used elsewhere ??????? Your thoughts would be very much appreciated Regards and best Chris O

Hi all, I'm interested in any thoughts on this Shinchuu sukashi piece apparently in brass and by the Iyo Shoami artist Hidenari. My interest simply stems from the fact that i haven't seen a tsuba such as this before. Many thanks chriso

Hi all, My wife and i are intending to visit Japan sometime next year. We haven't settled on dates, duration or places to visit yet but I would appreciate any suggestions from the forum. I, naturally enough would like to take in Sword fittings, and to a lesser degree swords. (Museums / Dealers). I would like to think that I may be in a position to bring back a nice tsuba or two. Being Buddhist, I would also like to visit and perhaps stay overnight at a Buddhist temple. I would also like to sample the food, Beer, Wine and Whisky, not necessarily in that order. My wife of course would like to visit gardens, take in Japanese art and visit historic sights, and of course spend the kids inheritance. I would appreciate any suggestions at all from the board members! Regards and many thanks Chris O

Now I may be pushing the friendship here, but

Thanks Chris, once again your post gives me something to work on. Regards Chris o -
Hi all, As said above, I may be pushing the friendship here but after the great response regarding information on Kanenori which has given me so much to work with, I'm hopeful that I may extract some info regarding my second Gunto by Fujiwara Kaneshige. The information that i have to date suggests that the smith worked through the 1930s and 40s in Seki, and while i don't think the sword is anything out of the ordinary, I'm a bit confused by the hot stamp, and the Arsenal stamp above the text although i think i may be correct in suggesting that the Arsenal stamp simply means that the sword at some stage came through that particular Arsenal and that the sword was not necessarily made there. Any information or comments would be greatly received Regards Chris O

Looking for any information or thoughts
Chriso replied to Chriso's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Very much appreciated, thanks Klaus. I've had so much good info that i will put up my second Gunto (which has a hot stamp) later today, perhaps I can get some information on it that will start off my investigation. Best wishes Chriso -

Thanks for that Chris. Any info at all will build on what i currently don't have. I'm hopeful that i may be able to get some info regarding the maker Regards Chriso -
Hi all, I picked up this Gunto a few years back and the only information that i have been able to find is that I think it was made by KaneNori @ Seki about 1943. The sword itself is unremarkable, with standard fittings I am looking for any info or comments to help me on my way. It doesn't help that I don't read Japanese script. Regards and thanks Chris o

Chers Peter, The tsuba is definitely soft metal, but although I still don't know much about it, I intend to file it, and not dispose of it. Perhaps one day i may be able to find out a bit more about it. Many thanks for your comments. Chris o

Many thanks for that Peter, currently on a steep learning curve but I'll get there. Cheers and best to all for the comments Chriso
