Noob with sword needs help
robinalexander replied to 2FixandRepair's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Robert, I'm not sure if you are a joke or not, but I will assume for 1 minute that you are serious ........no .... sorry I can't even pretend that you are serious. Rather than stuffing up this sword any more....just read this Forum. If you don't agree with, or like, what you read then find some other place to publish your BS. Brian (above) was a lot kinder than I am about your post and I like Newbies but seriously (?). -
KYUSHU - shops or fairs ?
robinalexander replied to Shuko's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
@Bugyotsuji Hi Piers, would you or anyone, be able to offer any advice to my compatriot? -
-
It's not worthy of being a wall hanger...very bad Chinese fake.

Tough one Dev.... would I pay $500 Aud for it.....probably not. It's always going to be a saya from one type of sword and a late NCO with missing latch (and you may never find another one). Having said that, you never know who has/needs what parts out there and they will pay if it meets their needs. If a person was lucky enough to have a spare late NCO saya then they will definitely be in the race. Your keen for pricing advice I know but IMO if your best bet would be put it up for Auction either regular auction or Ebay ...you can't lose and I have seen some 'married' swords and junk go for much higher than expected prices. Just be sure your upfront with pictures / description so that people know exactly what you are selling and what they are paying for. Maybe start at $300 US for 14 days ????? Just my thoughts but hope it helps. PS if there is no groove on the otherside of wooden tsuka (handle) where the latch used to be then that could indicate repro parts as well.

Dev I would be so surprised if that blade fitted in the Type 3 saya ...... never ever meant to go together and these late nco's have a long blade. Does it actually go into it or has it been displayed separately? Has the sword got a side lock on the other side from the pictures you have shown? and does the seppa (hand guard) have a corresponding hole for the side lock? See 'stock' pic below.

HI Dan...none of my business but just out of interest but how many Tsuba do you own? I fully understand if you don't wish to say...... in that case just give me a 'no comment'

Would you knowingly buy a gimei blade?

If I'm not mistaken Dee, you have already thought that -

Would you knowingly buy a gimei blade? Yes. As you have said its a nice blade, you like it and (bonus) it's priced correctly. Buy it! -
Tks Kevin welcome. Will have a look at pics when I get home...others might chime in too

KA (do you have a name?) ... A picture or two of the problem would be helpful. Sam is on the right track. My only variation is that I have used Silicon Repair Tape with great success. I don't leave it on....I only use it to hold the job in place until its set. Then remove it. It has no glue and sticks to itself like Sam's Teflon tape. Silicon tape can stretch to three times its length so that allows you gauge the appropriate holding strength you need depending on how robust or fragile your job is....also common water based glues will not stick to it.

Ukiyoe: I don't think this is going to polish out.

To new members at large
robinalexander replied to Stephen's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Yep tks mate @Stephen fully understand that but I have to say you really did put it well. My ref to 'carry on' vs 'go on' was more of a broad shot by NCO's at Officers who do 'carry on' a lot with unnecessary and sometimes unreasonable crap. It's a rank thing and, of course, never mentioned within earshot of an Officer. Had some really great Officers (mates) and a few not so ..... therefore you salute the rank not the person. Bet you've been in that situation. As far as being upside down.....no ....we're all normal down here! -

Not sure what prompted that mate, but all sounds good to me. Segway......back in my day Officers got told to "carry on" ....other ranks were told to "go on" -
Well that's a little bit special John .... very nice to have that info

Stolen sword : Your help is required ! (FOUND)
robinalexander replied to Tohagi's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Well Piers I just typed three responses and, on reflection, deleted each one.....lol, Im not falling for that one (its BIG ) PS .....Not 'BIG' as in the NMB member, he is ok -
That will do a 95 nicely Eric.

Hi Eric, Gun oil is fine for a Type 95 but not for others Type 98, 97 etc and Nihonto. I use Camellia or Choji oil on all of mine but that's only because have it. But you will receive other opinions Just search on oil on this website and you will find a wealth of knowledge (and opinion) in regard to looking after blades that are higher grade than 95's. If gun oil is good enough for you rifle in that climate, then its good enough for a 95 IMO. Only the blade that should need regular oiling but keep yiu eye on any rust that may develop on the saya. Unlike other Gunto and Nihonto, 95's are not made to be disassembled for maintenance and I advise against it as they don't always go back together as snugly, and besides there is nothing to see on the nakago.
