  1. Forgot to say that the inner side is white. Likely these are half finished due to the cancellation of the games.
  2. Due to timezones I've just finished to steal my salary.
  3. One has the writing Orimpiku and 5 circles, the other is in the shape and color of a tropical helmet (very common those days) and the 5 circles with flag on the other side and 5 circles base. I'm not aware of any other sakazuki with (aborted 1940) olimpic theme. Just as a plus my collection, waiting a dedicated room. I have dozen of laquered wood sakazuki some of exceptional beauty and value but those are already in their boxes and securely stored.
  4. What a great start Kinnan
  5. I collect this type of sakazuki, but only if military-related. There are some of astonishing beauty and they were produced in a miriad of different shapes and designs. I have 2 of the aborted olimpic games of 1940.
  6. Thanks Tom. My BD is the September 2. If it'll be open a ticket could be a nice present from my family.
  7. Agood one, Joe,
  8. curious about the habaki too...
  9. Greg, I'm not sure you can obtain a good steel from a chopped sword, at least not good enough as fresh tamahagane.. Tamahagane and shingane are forged together, too much work for an unpredictable result.
  10. Wonder if anybody has pictures of three saya "en suite" (e.g. katana wakizashi anf tanto) that hold three blades by the same Smith.. I personally can't remember to have seen such a thing so far not even in picture...
  11. FWIW the first three linked were most likely dead blades. Watching at the picture that show how the shingane most likely was exposed.
  12. It's a great work. I've used it extensively for my essay...
  13. Welcome Joo. The way you felt in love with Nihonto is similar to mine. You joined the right board to learn and have fun with the creme de la creme of western worldwide nihonto experts.
  14. It follows the grain of the hada where it was hit. Might be the impact has separated a lier from the others ? More important, do you see an hamon in the burnt part ?
  15. The same. Maybe due to provenance ? (We and Francesco are both from Italy)...
  16. Chances are that what burned the saya so badly had also ruined the hardening of the blade in that area. If so the sword is gone.
  17. Good Lord. I wish I had a 1/10th of Markus skill... Very nice blade,
  18. I'm almost sure it's from Fujishiro, however I've not marked it with an entry number re-directing to the source in the bibliography file. This is a major fault when discussing academically, so I suggest to use it with a grain of salt. If anybody remember exactly where this quote popped up I'll be very gratefully to be advised.
  19. This is for John Stuart. it seems the soldier that took the sword was part of the 7th US cavalry, In the Samurai Archives board there is an officer commander of a squadron of M1 Abrahms deployed in the DMZ of the 7th and it was a very active member (or at least it was when I participated). Maybe he have access to lists of names and dates we're not aware of ? I was absent for too many years from the board and likely he doesn't remember me but maybe you can try to ask him.
  20. Shirasaya aren't supposed to have no contact with the blade other than on the mune ? You have to put a really exaggerate amount of oil to gum a shirasaya.
  21. ... It smells of... Victory! Robert Duvall
