    And maybe someone's first attempt at it, too? It appears contrived to me. And if the habaki are trying for Kaga style, shouldn't they have five notches instead of three?

    Certainly looks like habaki to me. Rather unusual for tsuba motif. Could the 4 (shi) combined with the geometry imply "death on the cross"? I wouldn't rule it out.

    I'd use nothing more than a dry Q-tip gently on those wet looking areas and see if it will remove whatever is giving that appearance.

    Bryce, I've noticed he didn't always sign the same side of the blade, and not all had kao.
