An interesting short gunto with an osuriage ancestral blade
Ooitame replied to AntiquarianCat's topic in Nihonto
I would say Hizen, late Muromachi or early Shinto, maybe Tadayoshi lineage. -
My apologies yes the kissaki size and boshi, was what I was referring.
-
The long boshi threw me off from uda. Good one. Again Jussi, with instinct lead towards the right path, way to go!

British climate and nihonto care.

It depends on if you remove the old oil first and how. My opinion after cleaning using 99.9% isopropyl alchohol using tissue paper on top of optical grade cloth, I reapply oil and let it rest for a minute or two in order to absorb into openings and the metal itself. Follwed by the removal of excess. Just be careful of what you use to apply the oil and how much pressure. Too much pressure can cause minute scratches, however over oiling can be a problem if it clumps or leaves smears to attract moisture. In addition, you do not want extra oil seeping into any saya. Furthermore, be careful on drawing and returning the sword to its saya as that is where most damage can occur. Can you share a picture and description on the blade? -
I oil my Nakgao with a tissue paper and a little oil and use my fingers as little as possible to place back into the shirasaya. Before replacing back into the Shirasya I check for any tissue paper which may accumulate and cause a spot. One is on a 1478 mei sword with nice patina, the other is a gendai RS with here and there patina. I would think this helps preserve the Nakago and inscriptions and prevent further degradation, so further generations can apprreciate. However, the patina can help with sword age. Given the situation what are your thoughts?

@vajo I believe you like Nagmitsu, and studying hamon. I don't think it gets better than this, well maybe a professional photographer could make it better, anyways enjoy!

Katana side, think I am figuring out pics, lol. I asked him about that and he said he wanted to make the ji clear and leave it as in his opinion, and that of his teachers. Hamon to come next maybe... hope you enjoy as much as I do. Looks 100x better in hand.

As promised, NTHK kantiesho Nagamitsu Saku Showa Type 3, Saka Stamped Ichi 0313, tachi side hada; did a crappy job. But here you go.
-
Freshly polished Nagamitsu, pics coming soon. Hada was surprised to find mokume some which go into the shinoji, hamon activity is awesome, even found slight traces of hakikake in the ko-maru boshi.

First tsuba for a nihonto with the sword catch I have seen. Very interesting, thanks for the post. The round holes for accessories is also interesting, normally they have a different shape.

Hi all, Recently had a Uchigatana Koshirae and Tsuka made. With matching Shakudo Fuci-Gashiria, and Menuki sets. A healthy Shakudo Tsuba, which turned out to balance very well. A short single gold Habaki was needed in order to use the existing Mekugiana that was open. All with a dark gray Ishime texture. The theme is the world is an raging sea and a turbulent land, so keep your shishi close at hand. Hope you enjoy it.

I would say older blade, very late Muromachi, more likely Shinto, some signs of utsuri. I agree the dragon looks new, maybe the stamp was the engraver.

The last Samurai quote, "less mind". Best of luck in your journey into the knowledge on Nihonto. -
I have been looking to purchase a Naginata for some time. This one is very interesting, and has a nice sugata, many congratulations. Would look great in a new polish!

Superb! Given your artistic gifts and eye for details I would be curious what swords are on display, if you would like to share. -
It was a good one, a head scratcher for sure, I could only only venture Enju; despite nakgao generalities to that school. Thanks for the fun.
-
Is that dan or shirake utsuri? Hard to tell. I will go with Enju school.
-
Is it possible to see the entire nakago? Has there been powder recently used on the Mei? Those mekugi holes and reflection in the mei have me a bit off.
