  2. I have noticed this mantetsu sword which is coming up in auction , would like to know your thoughts also how much is the going price for a mantetsu sword , I would like to have a bid but expect its out of my price range
  3. I must admit the habaki doesn't fit as good as it could , but nice to think the other mounts are original ,I wondered if they were a later addition . regards matthew

  7. I recently posted a few pictures of this long tanto/short sword , and after holding the blade in the right light managed to get a picture of the temper line even though the blade is in bad condition, I'm just wondering if this will help date the sword ? thanks
  8. hi jesper , I have tried to remove the collar and it will only move about 1 cm which does show a polished finish , when I get the blade in the right light I can just see a very tight wavy temper line or is it called hamon line? well thanks for the advice I will just apply some oil . regards,matthew

After looking more closely at the blade it looks like someone may have lightly sanded the blade as you can see light scratch marks running in the same direction across the blade , is it worth trying to get these out , I don't expect the blade is worth the expense of having it polished by a professional ?

  12. hi thanks for your reply , I have taken the handle off with care and it shows that its unsigned , I will post some pics , the blade length is 13 inches to the copper piece before the handle , I would really like to know the age of it , but I expect that's very difficult as its unsigned ,thanks
  13. hi, I have just recently acquired what I think is a tanto I'm a real novice in this area and would like to know what age it could be and any other information relating to it , the fittings look very old as does the blade , thanks
  14. hi bruce ,thanks for your input , its difficult to know what to do sometimes ,ive collected many things in the past only to sell them on ,usually ended up without the item and then in time without the money , it a funny old game

I would like to thank you all for your replies , i have grown to love this sword though originally i was after an older sword , but after owning it for some time it has grown on me and i have learnt a lot about ww era swords its a difficult decision, I'm more interested in older swords though, i will probably end up selling the car instead
  16. Just wondering if collecting shin gunto swords will be a good investment ? I have a nice shin gunto which someone is interested in buying but I'm not sure if selling it is the right thing to , its not an old blade it has a showa mark and signed but the condition is very good ,hmmmm decisions

  18. This sword I have just seen in a local antique shop ,just thought I would run it by you guys to see what you think ,it in great condition but with no visable hamon , I'm not sure if its a fake maybe ? asking price £750 gbp

  21. Thanks for all the input ,I'm finding it very interesting , I have been looking closely at the sword and noticed a badge on the handle mount , I have posted a picture , is this a family name/mark ?
