Thanks for the input, i will look into shinsa. I had no hopes it was real since the last time I posted a few years ago it was a consensus that the signature was inconsistent to authentic. It was basically free in a large lot of swords and knives I picked up back then, after selling several I owe nothing to it. I do see that the hamon comes close but don't see it actually touching anywhere except at the tang. I suspect it was cleaned prior to me receiving it. Likely a novice made this as you say, kinda wish there was a way to find out who did it. Still confused as to why a fake would be hiding inside these vintage fittings, who would know and seems like a lot of work to just hide it. Looks great sitting on my shelf no matter who made it. Thanks again guys.

Thanks. I have that info just wondering if there is more to learn, perhaps someone knows more about if it really is a fake and perhaps by now knows who did these fakes and when they were done.

I know this is an old post but I thought I would see if any new input on this would be out there. I made a move a while back and it sat in storage, recently put it back on display and got me wondering what more I can learn about it. Thanks for all the help in the past guys.

not even a little cool? I looked the piece up, it only had Silver value. Thanks I have coins but they always have more value than scrap silver, I have pounds of this scrap sterling I use on random projects, eventually I will smelt it all down.

Thanks, I have a few pounds of scrap sterling so I use it where I can. I did not see that in examples but I can see where that makes sense. I will remember that if I ever decide to redo them. Thanks.

Stephen has a nice project going on and it gave me incentive to make a couple seppa for a gunto I posted questions about. The tsuba and seppa were loose and I thought why not destroy a perfectly good sterling silver bowl since I had no brass. Cut out was simple, I did a random hammer finish, knurled the edge and gave it an aged patina. Good snug fit now.

Since the tsuba and seppa were loose I decided to make extra seppa for this and it worked out well, now a snug fit. I used a sterling silver bowl and hand cut and fit the seppa. I did a random pattern hammer finish and hand knurled the edge for a nice finished look. Lastly I used some tarnishing fluid to give them an aged look. I initialed and dated them on the back side for the heck of it. I know Silver wasn't common for seppa but sadly I had no brass.

Tig of course, but don't though just kidding about that. The ray skin can be repaired nicely.

Looks good, that ray can be repaired fairly easily.

LOL we don't need no stinkin holes. Just weld the handle right to the tang.

Looks great but there is a hole in it. Can you fill weld that?

Thanks for the input guys. I love the way the hamon looks like lightning in the sun light. I assume that if it was acid etched the etching would disappear with a polish so I doubt I'd risk that without deeper knowledge of its origin. Seems like a lot to go through to just hide this in a Gunto if fake, like putting a Ferrari engine in a pinto, I wouldn't understand that logic. Seems like it would be an interesting piece if made by an infamous forger. More research ahead. Thanks again David

That's a lot of good info, intrigues me somewhat. So there is potential that it could be made by an infamous forger? The hamon lights up like lightning when in the sun, my paul chen doesn't have the depth in the hamon, quite nice for sure. I will spend some more time on research now thanks to your input. I posted pics in the translation forum under kanji id, but not much info came of it. It's not a mil blade.

Yes everything fits perfect, handle has some damage but very good fit. Since the blade is signed and not military I was concerned as to the authenticity of these fittings. The saya is wood and almost all fittings are non magnetic. Thanks for the info it helps. David

Wondering what the numbers on this fitting means. None of the other fittings have a number. This is a non military marked blade. Thanks David

Hey guys just signed up to check out the forum and seek info on a blade. Looks like a lot of information to digest. I am a watchmaker by trade but have made several knives over the years. I made a few leaf spring swords in the 80's after being introduced to angel sword at the Wisconsin ren fair. My finest work was a matching pair of hand made Ninja To that angel sword bought off me. Along with being a watchmaker I currently make and sell a custom g10 handle conversion to a couple Cold Steel knife models.

i will assume you believe it to be fake. no worries i had no expectations. still nicer than my paul chen bamboo and cost way less.thanks again for the input. David
