  1. Im stunned! Is there something here that Im not seeing? Owned by the emperor himself perhaps?
  2. I think 5 8 and 9.
  3. Im not well up on smithing etc but why suriage can a smith not forge an extension and forge weld it to the nakago stump in a similar way to the method used to conserve a mei? The question is debateable anyway as I see it is no longer avaiable.
  4. Ill be there this year :D EDIT: Id like to catch up with any Perth nihontophiles for a beer and chinwag if thats possible.
  5. Thanks for posting that info. ArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrH! Ive looked at the calender Ill be away that weekend. Damm and double damm! I could arrange be very sick that week
  6. The Republicans are going to get me for that
  7. Was this the one?
  8. Thank you so much. I dont quite know how to put the characters to the translation yet but Ill keep working on it. Thank you again Steve
  9. Ive had a go at the mei on this sword that is supposed to date around 1890. Not sure if I'm on the right track. The seller had a name but it does not appear in the smith database. So can someone help please I'm having a go at the other side and will post it when my brain packs up again. Regards Steve PS Sorry I attached the wrong file and now cannot get the correct one to download I had Sane Naga Shi ? Toshi ? Dont know???
  10. Thank you Ken, it is a very informative presentation. Im looking forward to my next trip to Japan and will include the museum.
  11. Just my opinion but it looks horrible. kinda 'hunchback of Notre Dame'
  12. Boil till soft. Drain. Leave in covered container for 3 days. Mash with a minimum of water to produce a paste.
  13. Bonhams? Sotherbys? Id get them professionally assessed and valued as you are looking in the region of thousands for this lot. I was salivating over the block prints but know that SWMBO would never countenance the expense regardless of the flowers or supplication
  14. Ill save the others here the job of giving the same advice: 1. DONT clean the rust off the tang (nakago) it will devalue the blade. 2. DONT use any kind of abrasive (creme cleanser included) on the blade. Just light machine oil and a very clean cloth but don't oil the tang. You can hold the sword by the nakago, that will help to neutralise some of the active red rust. 3. Dont touch the polished blade ANYWHERE with your skin. If you have checked its sharpness your have now left skin acids on the blade and it WILL rust at the edge. So clean them off. 4. When you pull the blade in and out of the scabbard (saya) please do it along the spine of the blade so you don't scratch the blade against the side of the saya. 5. Dont let an auction house dealer near it as they have NO idea about a true trad jap sword (nihonto) Which yours IS. The estimate is probably correct $1000 ono. Wartime swords (Gunto) even family traditionally made swords in gunto fittings are not fetching high prices today. Not unless there is proof that it is by a famous smith or has really high level fittings (yours does not). Having said that they are officer fittings and an NCO would not have had a sword that good. PM sent

    African knobkerry?
  16. You were very fortunate John I envy you especially your choice of spouse :D A small piffilling point, the presentation of a gift is very important to the Japanese, that is the way it is wrapped or packaged. We've had some amazing gifts from our exchange students and they explained that the way it is presented is nearly as important as its content.
  17. Hey I was in that temple last month. :D Great place!
  18. Perhaps it is the photos and my eyes but is this blade nickel/chrome plated? Would not be the first blade that someone has desided to "improve".
  19. Please bear in mind that anything garish or gaudy will imediately see the piece labeled as fake. Most decorated Japanese saya are restrained. There is a very wide gap between the lavish and often tasteless ornamentation found on some asian "weapons" and the genuine Japanese koshira.
  20. No I didnt wear it I am too shy to ask. Yes I was absolutely rapt with the Kironoya and all in it. I found them in the lonely planet guide.
  21. I should add I want to stay with Katsumata-san at his Kirinoya Ryokan in Narita. Katsumata-san and his wife were delightful people and the Ryokan very cozy. I wrote a travel piece on my last trip to Hakuba, it was a great trip with good snow, lovely people and good food. :D
  22. We (my wife and I) are coming to Japan next year. We are due long service and will take a few weeks to potter about the globe. Im hoping I can get into a weeks engraving course in America as well as visiting Japan and Europe.
  23. Ditto. Thats why I was making enquiries of the Japanese Tourist Bureau within seconds of reading about it.
  24. Dont believe a word of it Ive just been to the Japan Tourist Bureau website and they state they have not heard of any offer.
  25. I read once that sumo wrestlers would have oversized katana made to be in proportion to thier great bulk. It did not seem farfetched.
