  1. Yes, but they do not seem to follow the remit for Udenuki-no-ana, too large, and in a strange orientation. I feel sure they had some other purpose.
  2. Could be water damage, and possibly two sukashi 'coins' could have come loose or been knocked out...(?) The word 'ware' generally means crack or split. I am not sure how to describe the damage to yours except 腐食 'fushoku' corrosion from deep pits of 錆 'sabi'?
  3. Well, I was reading his X account and it seems last week he went without me while I was away! Dang… An old faded sign indicates where the Un school (Unji etc.) lived and worked by the Ukaigawa around 1300, Namboku Chō. (Still looking forward to finding my own way there sometime though when the extreme summer weather eases off.)
  4. 備(以下きれる)says "Bi-, (cut off below)" 関谷吉廣 Sekiya Yoshihiro (?) on the right must be a previous owner's name.
  5. Yes, it's a different Kanji, but that does not always mean it is a different person. Sometimes people changed their kanji during their lifetime, especially artists!
  6. Good point. It makes you wonder what they are thinking. (To be fair your second set of papers does say Heianjo.) Also there is further variety on the paperwork such as: Mumei, Yoshiro Mumei, Yoshiro zōgan Mumei Koike Yoshiro
  7. Liking the workmanship, but not so much the signature…
  8. Kyle, see your pm seven hours ago.
  9. Dale, re that strange hooked bend above. Today I was watching a programme about Ainu art, and noticed just such a feature in the design on the back of a long Ainu cloak.
  10. Just to help you with the reading. I didn’t follow the rabbit hole any further!
  11. https://tokka.biz/sword/morimichi.html Check that out, Mike.
  12. Sadly, because of the state, the value is in how much you love it. A certain amount of cleaning these is possible, but ‘burnt’ paper like that is generally not reversible, in my limited experience. Not sure who did your Ukiyoe Kabuki print; my old eyes fail. One of the Utagawa school is possible. Someone here should be able to read that Gō and artist name.
  13. Brown!?!?! I can do brown too! The actor 坂東箕助 Bando Minosuke… by… Utagawa…
  14. Yes, Malcolm still lurks. (Thankfully) Loving your triptych.
  15. 武州住............................
  16. This is from Vol II Netsuké & Inro by Lazarnick. (Some signatures are closer than others.)
  17. This first page is from The Index of Inro Artists by Wrangham.
  18. Hi Mark, no, sadly I am not confident, but so far no-one has contradicted or offered anything better. The first character would normally be the key to looking him up, but that one is quite squiggly. I can show you some examples of Tenmin signatures for comparison, not an exact match, but pretty close, IMHO. Also he likes to put a little comment in a line just to the right of his signature +Kao, sometimes including the character 翁 for old man. (I wonder if the illustration on the front is not also an exaggerated portrait of himself?)
  19. He has made metal look like lacquer! All metalwork means it must be quite heavy.
  20. Had some of these over the years. Both tanto and longer ones. Lovely to hold in the hands and imagine their past. Not sure there is a market for them out there, however...?
  21. Some beautifully done calligraphy there, and a neat sword depiction.
  22. Not obvious from the photo but Kagami-buta Netsuké metalwork were often signed. (You might need to pop it out to look on the reverse.)
  23. Hmmm… also in Lazarnick it says that Tenmin was often copied.
