Hello all- looking at this 98 gunto. The blade is a little rough. If there are any other pics that would help, let me know. Thanks in advance, Chris from WI Also i know this is a ‘wanted to buy’ section plug, but if anyone knows a good place to find a 98 Tsuba, some seppas, and mekugi, I would appreciate the help.

Thank you, appreciate it.

I was just referring to Guido’s post above. That he couldn’t discern what the top three characters were. Like i said, i have no idea what I’m doing. I thought I’ve read that the province is in the first few characters but I could be way off. Chris

The top characters would be the date and province?

What does the red lacquer ‘158’ represent? And thank you for the help so far! Chris

Scarce 1875 Pattern Army Field Officer Kyu-Gunto
Bochavista replied to Bochavista's topic in For Sale or Trade
I am not sure. I posted it in Military Swords group and a couple people had said it looked like a ‘practical’ blade because of the hamon and nakago. I know that it is sharp. If there any other photos that could help confirm or deny this let me know and I’ll snap them. Thanks, Chris -
For sale is a rare 1875 pattern Type 19 Field Grade Kyu-gunto. It’s a match to page 79 of Dawson’s book. The blade length is 26”, with an overall length of approximately 33 1/4”. The blade is unsigned. I will attach a ton of pics but if you want something more specific, please let me know. Asking $1,300 USD plus shipping, PayPal only. I’m located in Wisconsin. Thanks for looking, Chris B

Nice Rare 1875 Field Officer Kyu-Gunto
Bochavista replied to Bochavista's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Thanks guys. It is sharp. It is unsigned. Does ‘practical’ mean handmade? -
Just wanted to share some pics of an auction find. I believe and have been told it’s a fairly rare 1875 Field officer kyu-gunto. It has a very ornate back strap. Cool piece. Shout out to Shamsy and Bruce for their help!! Chris B

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Definitely not out much and will hold on to the sword so at least one fake is off the street! What is Dawson's book or site?
-
I will give it a try. Thanks for all the info. If I can get to the tang I will post the pics!

I'm not sure, it doesn't look painted but I'm not an expert. Is there a way to tell if it's brass versus aluminum?

Hi, long time history fan taking up a new hobby! Just bought what I think is a shin gunto 95 from an estate auction and it is very cool. I read John Yumoto's book and bought the encyclopedia of Japanese swords and have done a lot of internet research but haven't seen some of the stamps on my sword. Just trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can, thanks! Chris from WI
