This belongs to a half Japanese freind who inherited it from his grandfather. He's wanting to know more about it as it came to his possession with no backstory or documentation. Any guesses or rough estimations are welcome.

I can try but it's way out of polish. Like I mentioned it's hard to see any activity even in person. Like I noted on the paper, it looks like a komaru boshi, itame hada and it's got pretty decent fumbari.
-
Forgot to add it has a shallow iori mune

Lf opinions on this. It's hard to see any activity in the hamon or hada, what I can see is listed in the photo of my notes. I'm thinking osuriage koto probably late kamakura early nambokucho, but I'm not an expert. Any other opinions, school or smith?

What’s your go to sword oil?
PhoenixDude replied to Cookie4Monstah's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Don't use gun oil on swords. A lot of them have cleaning elements meant to dissolve powder residue, lead, copper fouling etc in them, as well as lubricants that may or may not come off with isopropyl. This applies to things like wd40 and 3 in 1, break free, etc as well. Stick with sword oil or mineral oil. -
Got any close ups of hamon activity?

Looks like masayoshi to me

Rats are commonly depicted as they are one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. You see these quite often in tosogu, take a look at the wild things thread for examples.

Thanks for the advice. I go every two years.

The problem with this is how do you know someone didn't take one of these and just dunk it in a bucket of bleach mud and salt for a month to swindle some gaijin
-
That's early enough, I was under the impression ko katsucchi and ko tosho started in the muromachi period, and the tsuba before that were usually nerikawa or kinko construction. I'm not a tetsu tsuba guy so pardon my ignorance. And I'm not so concerned about ornateness as I would be for a later artistic piece for my collection.
-
I'm curious what would happen if this was sent to shinsa
-
Looking for older than that. My goal is to eventually get a kamakura/heiean tachi and have it mounted in period correct koshirae the way it would have been when it was made.

If we are talking tsuba, Kinko works in either nademaru or aoi/mokko gata, If papered would probably be tachi kanagushi, ko-kinko, or ko-kagamishi, no kozuka or kogai ana. Decorations usually simple and technically uncomplex. menuki would be in/yon or Makoto menuki, papered to ko-kinko or ko-mino.
-
I know this is a long shot but I am looking for any tosogu someone might be willing to part with that's pre muromachi, like the tsuba that was sold here a while back.
